Why it's normal to not known what you will be doing
My experience with how I choose what I am doing
Unlike the super-enlightened people that know exactly what they want to do or which direction to take specifically, I have almost never had a single clue on what I wanted to do. In terms of my professional career I decided at the last moment to go into IT. I had a couple of weeks left to decide what I will study next after graduating from 9th grade (10th - 12th grade is essentially high school). I chose IT only because I liked technology and thought it's worth a shot.
Years later and I am working in that industry. No plan, no idea, just a choice that I had to make and that's that.
How this correlates to adult life?
Have you ever had a situation where you have tried to start something new/different and then the noise kicks in? I sure have. Some examples of this that I have seen are 'but I have never done this before', 'I am not made for this', 'too saturated' and so on and so forth.
Things would be so much easier if I didn't have to deal with my own mind constantly when doing something even remotely out of the ordinary but I suppose that is generally how things go in life. Resistance is natural. Or maybe I am just delusional, that is also a possibility (joking but is always worth asking the question).
The unknown is a bit of an interesting one, on one side, you don't know what you don't know (which can be rather anxiety-inducing or the opposite). How do I know what niche should I pick? I simply don't know, not until real effort is placed towards that goal/thing. How should I present myself? Wish I only knew, would make it so much easier if I had that 'light bulb' moment early on. Again, not how these things go, not for me at least.
Whatever the circumstances, I have noticed that generally speaking, it is better to do even the smallest thing possible and do it poorly at first, than to do nothing at all. Might be the perfectionism in me that always wants it right here and now but at least it's getting better. There are plenty of things that I want to change about my life right now, some of these I am already taking action on but don't see any meaningful results. Success criteria is a whole different conversation altogether and is worth looking into separately as it also influences the perception.
All in all, small things matter, so I am doing a few small "meaningless" things that on their own don't add up but certainly create momentum for my life. The small things grant me insight on what I want and then I start getting answers on the question previously mentioned.
