matsuris and fairs: June 9 2024

so what are we up to the day after a funday? more fun i guess.

succulent lovers' haven

apparently i was not the only one who stayed out all night, so when the housemate came back, he brought news. plants, succulents to be precise, were sold in a fair at a shrine two stations away. he knew i am a plant lover, he knew that this news would pique my interest. and yes he is correct. that was around lunch and the other housemate wanted to eat out, perfect. we ate out near that shrine.

we had a very delectable lunch, but i was already looking forward to get my hands on those succulents. i was planning to buy some soil to be honest, but would not shy away from a possible plant haul. the fair was on the shrine grounds.

i was literally geeking at this point, taking mental notes on which plants to consider buying. and there were customers in there, we were trying to get past people at some points. this made my heart leap with joy. the fair will be closing about an hour from now and discounts are now starting to fly off. i wonder what happens at closing time, probably some plants will be given off for free.

so after three or four rounds, i finally settled with these four. starting from upper left going clockwise:

• euphorbia gabizan - this was so cute and reminded me of a pineapple
• echiveria agavoides - i still don't know which specific cultivar it is but that red popped
• pachypodium gracilius - i wanted something unique but i was scared of buying this, she seemed too delicate yet costs that much even when young
• echiveria "beads of dew" - she is just so pretty not to buy

these are the new additions to my collection, i hope i can keep them alive for long. oh, there were no plant soil on sale as if i was actively looking for it.

shrine matsuri

today marked the culmination of the shrine festival or matsuri in our neighborhood. that meant that a parade will take place. yesterday, they had a parade with the mini version of this mikoshi or "mini shrine" which were carried by the children of our place. you can actually see a silhouette of it inside the room on the left side. i actually took some pictures of that too but decided not to post due to the exposed faces of lots of children.

so today is the adult version with an adult sized mikoshi. i took this picture above as we passed by the place around lunch time. offerings were placed in front of this carefully designed gilded float. this may look a bit small but weighs very heavy. the heaviest on records weighed 4.5 tons lifted by 300 people.

the parade passed us by as we went home from the plant shopping. mikoshi was carried by up to 20 men and women. and they were also in matsuri garb. they carried the float around the entire neighborhood for hours. of course they took turns in carrying the heavy load as if declaring that no burden is too heavy when faced together in unity.
