Chaotic thoughts tend to surface in the background when we face adversity. In other words, amidst the whirlwind of unfavourable news, all our fears and every possible terrible scenario tend to emerge and linger in our minds; but that is precisely when we must activate the wellbeing protocol, which involves an active three-step process.
Active process
1- Breathe: Breathe in and hold the air in your lungs for a few seconds, then breathe out slowly; this way, you’ll be regulating the hypothalamus, calming negative thoughts and, at the same time, relaxing your diaphragm.
2- Channel: Once we have controlled our breathing, we can ‘reverse’ our thoughts – that is, replace chaos with favourable possibilities; in this way, we reduce stress and replace it with concrete possibilities.
At this point, understanding what we are facing gives us powerful tools and enables us to assess the situation more effectively, understand it and even put forward our opinions.
3- Positivity: Once we have grasped the full picture, with its pros and cons, and are aware of every possible outcome, that is when positivity emerges, as we have a clear path to identifying which solution or solutions will work.
This is the point where, as the saying goes, we face the music and tackle the situation head-on.
I recently used this wellbeing protocol and its three-step process myself.
Faced with my husband’s medical condition—a suspected case of gastric cancer—and having gone through the most dire and chaotic scenarios imaginable, I focused on turning all those emotions and fears around.
Whilst it is true that this three-step process is quite difficult and perhaps complex, it was what kept me afloat. Amidst the obvious tears, I set about researching what we were facing at that moment; after taking a breath, trying to control my crying and put on a calm and confident face, I was able to present my analogies to the doctors. Seeing that I was a family member who was asking questions, seeking clarification and sharing what I understood—rather than someone who was simply crying and nodding—they took the time to explain things more clearly.
This process, having reached the second stage, moved on to the third, where positivity became an impenetrable shield—complete with its own ‘antioxidant’—which has allowed us to move forward, leaving the darkness behind on this journey; a journey we are still on.
The steps I took at this stage were very difficult; I felt as though I had been thrown back to earlier years when I had never gone through this process. For this reason, I feel that life itself teaches us new lessons – some of them hard – so that we may be strong in the future, stand our ground and protect ourselves, ask questions and do it all over again.
It is a process of life that we all go through more often than we might like, but it is up to us to break free from those situations where pain overwhelms us and fear paralyses us.
We are beings who learn, who remember with every fibre of our being; we move forward and even take a step back in the face of our fears (like me), but we press on regardless, because we have already walked that path and learnt to change direction when necessary, knowing what might happen and how to respond when it does.
