Net-juu no Susume (2017)

Hello everyone. In most romantic comedies, the story usually begins with students or young characters facing various challenges as they try to organize both their lives and the love that blossoms amidst chaos and senseless moments. But what happens when the story starts with a common feeling like exhaustion and the search for fun in your 30s? It might sound unrealistic, but in Japan, on the contrary, there's the term NEET, a person who neglects their studies or work but somehow always manages to support themselves. With that premise, an anime aired in 2017 that, despite having that basic structure, actually became a very good and popular romantic comedy. So today I'll give you my opinion on "Net-juu no Susume."

En la mayoría de comedias románticas, el entorno suele iniciar con estudiantes o personajes jóvenes que deben enfrentar diversos retos para organizar tanto su vida como ese amor que florecerá en medio de caos o momentos sin sentido. Pero ¿qué pasa cuando la historia inicia desde un sentimiento en común como lo es el agotamiento y la búsqueda de diversión desde los 30 años? Puede sonar irreal, pero en Japón, por el contrario, se conoce el término nini, una persona que deja de lado el estudio o el trabajo, pero que de alguna forma siempre se las arregla para sustentarse. Pues con esa premisa, en el año 2017 salió en emisión un anime que, aunque tenía esa estructura base, la verdad se convirtió en una muy buena comedia romántica popular, por lo que hoy les daré mi opinión sobre "Net-juu no Susume".

Also known as Recovery of an MMO Junkie and Gamer in Rehab, this manga is written and illustrated by Rin Kokuyō. It began publication in 2013 through Media Factory and ran until 2018, comprising only two volumes. Due to its popularity, it received an anime adaptation in 2017, directed by Kazuyoshi Yaginuma, produced by Signal.MD, and licensed by Crunchyroll, consisting of 11 episodes. The story follows Moriko Morioka, who, at 30, quits her job, exhausted by the monotonous routine and with some savings to help her live comfortably. Self-proclaimed as a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), he immerses himself in wanting to return to his gamer days, wanting to enter his favorite online game, but upon seeing that after years it is not available, he comes across a similar one, managing to enter this new world, but with a character that he mistakenly chooses as male and that this will be the trigger of an adventure for Moriko.

También conocido como Recovery of an MMO Junkie y Gamer in Rehab, este manga está escrito e ilustrado por Rin Kokuyō. Comenzó a publicarse en 2013 a través de Media Factory y se extendió hasta 2018, con solo dos volúmenes. Debido a su popularidad, recibió una adaptación al anime en 2017, dirigida por Kazuyoshi Yaginuma, producida por Signal.MD y licenciada por Crunchyroll, que consta de 11 episodios. La historia sigue a Moriko Morioka, quien, a los 30 años, renuncia a su trabajo, agotada por la rutina monótona y con algunos ahorros para vivir cómodamente. Autoproclamada como Nini (Ni estudia, ni trabaja, ni recibe formación), se sumerge en el deseo de volver a sus días de jugadora, queriendo entrar a su juego en línea favorito, pero al ver que después de años no está disponible, encuentra uno similar, logrando entrar a este nuevo mundo, pero con un personaje que elige erróneamente como masculino y que será el detonante de una aventura para Moriko.

Something I have to mention is that, although this anime presents the protagonist as a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), it's merely a label or explanation for the lifestyle she begins to adopt, as it's somewhat removed from the reality of what a NEET actually is. However, it does serve as a nod to abandoning the search for knowledge about this gender or this well-known lifestyle, which we know has a different name in Latin America and other parts of the world. The point is that here it's presented as a choice made after having already established something stable, a scenario that doesn't usually unfold that way. What does stand out is the fact that the protagonist is shy and has trouble socializing, something typical in some romantic comedies, but which, within this context, resonates somewhat with the reality of many.

Algo que tengo que hacer mención es que, aunque este anime nos presenta a la protagonista bajo este término de nini, es algo que está solo como un título o explicación al modo de vida que empieza a llevar, pues está algo alejado de la realidad de lo que es realmente un nini. Sin embargo, no deja de ser un guiño a desertar esa búsqueda de saber sobre este género o esta conocida modalidad de vida que sabemos que en Latinoamérica y otras partes del mundo tiene otro nombre. Sin embargo, el tema es que acá se nos presenta como una elección luego de ya haber establecido algo estable, un caso que no suele pasar por lo general de esa forma. Lo que sí destaca es el hecho de que la protagonista es alguien tímida y con problemas de socializar, algo típico en algunas comedias románticas, pero que, encajado en el entorno de esta, es algo que sí va un poco pegado a la realidad de muchos.

Putting that aside, it's one of those adult romantic comedies that's actually fun. It explores confidence and focusing on smiling through self-esteem, and the plot unfolds in a way that lets us feel the mutual understanding between these two broken women forming, how the romance is balanced with a slightly more detached approach than a saccharine one, and how sometimes a quiet love with shared interests takes time to mature, but it does work. It's one of those anime that you enjoy watching, and it also represents many people who want to make the most of their free time after a long day. It's one of my favorites, and I personally really like the broken woman character because she doesn't fit a stereotype; she breaks the mold of the perfect girl and gradually shapes herself into what she wants. Dejando esto de lado, es de esas comedias románticas adultas, pero divertidas. Explora la confianza y el enfocarse en sonreír desde la autoestima, y la trama se va desarrollando a modo de que sintamos cómo se va formando esa convivencia mutua entre rotas, cómo se equilibra el romance un poco más desapegado de lo que sería uno melagoso y cómo a veces un amor tranquilo y con gustos en común tarda en madurar, pero da resultados. Es de esos animes que disfrutas verlo y a su vez es esa representación de muchos de los que buscan disfrutar de más sus ratos libres luego de una jornada agotadora. Es de mis favoritos y personalmente me gusta mucho el personaje de la rota porque no es alguien que represente un estereotipo, sino que se sale de ese patrón de chica perfecta y que se va moldeando poco a poco a lo que ella quiere.
