Oops, Not Today
"Oops! Wait..." I caught myself just before tapping the confirm button on one of the e-commerce platforms this morning. There's the 8.8 SALE (8th of August), and discounts are everywhere.
Whilst there are important things for the little guy in my cart (e.g., disposable pee pads, treats, and such), I just had to check again to make sure no unnecessary items had been added. A few days back, I canceled an order right after the payment was processed because it suddenly dawned on me that we actually did not need them.
Last time, the husband reminded me that Yongi didn't need another bed when I was scouting for one. "He already has 3, but rarely uses them since he sleeps with us." He said.
"Right. Right." I agreed, apologetically.
Well, he also bought things which he thought we would need, but they ended up collecting years in the cabinet or storage. That's why we agreed to be each other's gatekeeper to avoid impulse buys. Hence, we remind one another to think things over before getting them, especially since we are keen on streamlining our possessions to have fewer things needing managing (not much stuff to maintain, organize, or store).
The funny thing is that while we are intentional about a low-maintenance living, we still fall prey to sale traps from time to time, just like this morning.
Anyway, after reminding myself to wait, a recheck made me realize that the things I wanted to buy were not needed for the next 30 days or so. The LilGuy's pee pads and treats are still plenty, and I was almost tricked into buying them (today) because of the "SALE" banners flashing before my eyes.
The pause made me see clearly that while the "discount" sounded like "savings," it also meant getting things that would occupy space for a month or more, and they would be collecting dust, hence requiring cleaning. I didn't like the thought of it, so I closed the shopping app, well aware that the "SALES" happen often and I'm not really missing out on anything.
Aah, thank goodness for the day's little win!
