Today I have the pleasure of inviting you to discover and learn a bit about the colonial history of the province of Ciego de Ávila, from its urban planning styles, architecture, buildings, and the natural environment of the everyday Avilean. I will also take you on a tour along different avenues where I will show you the Museum of Fine Arts, the boulevard, rural squares, and local streets.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a conocer y aprender un poco de historia colonial de la provincia de Ciego de Ávila, desde sus estilos urbanísticos, arquitectura, edificios y ambiente natural del avileño de a pie. También les presentaré un recorrido por distintas avenidas donde les mostraré el museo de bellas artes, boulevar, plazas rurales y calles locales.

I always appreciate these walks through my town, where every corner has its story, where something is always happening—someone selling, someone waiting, someone watching. I walk slowly because the neighborhood deserves respect; here you greet, you observe, and you keep your distance.

These structural areas aren't made for running—they're made for recognizing, looking, moving forward, and looking again. That's how you truly explore the historic center: without rushing, without excess, just following the path you already know by heart and along which thousands of people pass every week.

Siempre aprecio estas caminatas por mi pueblo, donde cada giro tiene su historia, donde siempre pasa algo, alguien vendiendo, alguien esperando, alguien mirando. Camino despacio porque el barrio se respeta, aquí se saluda, se observa y se guarda la distancia.

Estas zonas estructúrales no están hechas para correr, están hechas para reconocerla, mirar, avanzar, volver a mirar, así se recorre el casco histórico de verdad, sin apuro, sin exceso, solo siguiendo el camino que ya uno conoce de memoria y por el que transcurren miles de personas semanalmente.

All these colonial structures date back to the late 19th century and are located on the most emblematic avenues of the city of Ciego de Ávila: Independencia Street and Joaquín Agüero Street.

These buildings, such as the Teatro Principal, hold many stories—operettas, silent films, and countless nights of performances with artists, all preserved in memory. Next to it stands the ETECSA building, and further back is the Santiago-Habana hotel, currently undergoing structural remodeling.

Todas estas estructuras coloniales datan de finales del siglo XlX y están localizadas en las avenidas más emblemáticas de la ciudad avileña, calle Independencia y Joaquín Agüero.

Estas arquitecturas como el Teatro Principal, guardan muchas historias, operetas, cine mudo y miles de noches de espectáculos con artistas, que quedan guardadas en el recuerdo. A su costado se ubica la empresa ETECSA y más atrás el hotel Santiago-Habana, actualmente en remodelación estructural.

The small boulevard is very friendly to me, very peaceful to walk along in the afternoons. Nestled along the commercial center and conceived with elements of modern style and existing heritage values, it is characterized by eclectic architecture.

It features interesting sculptures, galleries, retail shops, and important cultural venues throughout the year. The weather was very favorable—partly cloudy and perfect for long walks.

El pequeño boulevar es muy amigable para mí, muy tranquilo recorrerlo en las tardes, enclavado a lo largo del centro comercial y concebido con elementos de estilo moderno y valores patrimoniales existentes, se caracteriza por una arquitectura ecléctica.

Presenta interesantes esculturas, galerías, tiendas mercantiles y escenarios importantes culturales durante todo el año. El tiempo era muy favorable, estaba parcialmente nublado y perfecto para caminatas largas.

The largest and most eye-catching buildings on the main avenue are the Banco de Crédito y Comercio (BANDEC), with their neoclassical facades characterized by monumental columns and decorative pediments.

The alameda is the heart of the city, serving as the primary social gathering place for people throughout the day. It is appreciated in detail, with its buildings and wide commercial streets.

Los edificios más grandes y vistosos de la avenida principal, son los Bancos De Crédito y Comercio (BANDEC) con sus fachadas neoclásicas, caracterizadas por columnas monumentales y frontones decorativos.

La alameda es el corazón de la ciudad, que constituye el primordial encuentro social de personas durante todo el día, se aprecia con detalles, sus edificios y amplias calles comerciales.

Upon leaving the historic center, I head to Máximo Gómez Park, a public space that over the years has been the setting for cultural activities, popular celebrations, and social gatherings that are part of everyday life in Ciego de Ávila.

As you can see in the images, it is located right between two residential buildings, 9 stories high, with great architectural value. Its lush trees, the statue of the independence military figure, and its benches invite you to stop for a few minutes to observe the city's slow pace.

Al salir del centro histórico, me acerco al parque Máximo Gómez un espacio público que a lo largo de los años, ha sido escenario de actividades culturales, celebraciones populares y encuentros sociales que forman parte de la vida cotidiana Avileña.

Como pueden ver en las imágenes esta situado en el centro de 2 edificios poblacionales, de 9 plantas con gran valor arquitectónico. Sus árboles frondosos, estatua del militar independentista y bancos invitan a detenerse unos minutos para observar el ritmo pausado de la ciudad.

Further ahead, there is a square named Camilo Cienfuegos, designed for revolutionary events on the island, such as marches, festivals, and political rallies, well preserved with its green gardens.

In almost every place you'll see around this area, if you look closely, there are many royal palms—some planted, others heritage trees, since in case you didn't know, it's a national symbol of Cuba. These squares are also embraced by soccer fans; as you can see, many people are playing this sport, and even more so now that the World Cup is taking place.

Mas adelante existe una plaza nombrada Camilo Cienfuegos diseñada para eventos revolucionarios de la isla, como marchas, festivales y actos políticos, bien conservada con sus jardines verdes.

En casi todos los lugares que verán por esta parte, si se fijan hay muchas palmas reales, muchas sembradas y otras patrimonios, ya que si no lo sabían es un atributo nacional de Cuba. Estas plazas son acogidas por los fanáticos del fútbol, como pueden ver hay muchos practicando este deporte y más ahora que está presente el mundial.

The rural environment conveys a sense of calm. The songs of birds and insects blend with the distant sound of the wind rustling the palm leaves.

Walking through these places and their surroundings allows you to discover another hidden side of the town. A large mural paying tribute to the athlete Mijaín López, without a doubt a living legend of Cuban sports—4-time Olympic champion, 5-time world champion, 4-time Pan American champion, and holder of numerous world medals in his style, Greco-Roman wrestling.

El ambiente rural transmite una sensación de calma. Los cantos de las aves y insectos se mezclan con el sonido distante del viento moviendo las hojas de las palmas.

Caminar estos lugares o alrededores permite descubrir otra cara oculta de pueblo. Un gran mural para homenajear al deportista Mijail López, sin duda una leyenda viva del deporte en cuba, 4 veces campeón olímpico, 5 veces campeón mundial, 4 veces campeón panamericano y múltiples medallas mundiales en su estilo Lucha Grecorromana.

This modern "Ciego de Ávila" sign marks the beginning of the official entrance to my city. It stands on the ring road right on the main street—the very artery that runs across the entire island of Cuba and connects each of its provinces.

The architectural work represents the city's eclecticism and symbolizes the doorways and portals, a distinctive element of the region.

Este moderno letrero de “Ciego de Ávila” marca el inicio de la entrada oficial a mi ciudad. Se alza en la circunvalación justo en la calle central, la misma arteria que atraviesa toda la isla de Cuba y conecta cada una de sus provincias.

La obra arquitectónica representa el eclecticismo de la ciudad y simboliza los portales, elemento distintivo de la región.

The architecture of the roundabout was conceived by the highest authorities of the municipality to renovate the image of that area and to improve traffic flow at the intersections of the central highway and the North and South ring roads.

Back home, you can observe that there are many political banners and writings—something characteristic of our Island.

La arquitectura de la rotonda fue ideada por las máximas autoridades del municipio para renovar la imagen de esa área y para mejorar el tránsito en las intersecciones de la carretera central y las circunvalaciones Norte y Sur.

Volviendo al hogar, pueden observar qué hay muchas pancartas y escritos políticos, algo característico de nuestra Isla.

Something that caught my attention in this area was the Yisán restaurant, the only one of its kind in the province. For years, it has been a benchmark of authentic flavors and Chinese culinary tradition—one of my favorites in my youth.

It is currently undergoing reconstruction of both the interior kitchen areas and the exterior structure, which includes a café and a shop. These are part of the renovation work being carried out by workers from the Construction Materials Enterprise (MICONS).

Algo que captó mi atención por esta zona, fue el restaurante Yisán, único en su tipo en la provincia, ha sido por años un referente de sabores auténticos y tradición culinaria china, de mis favoritos en la juventud.

Actualmente está en reconstrucción de las las áreas interiores de la cocina y la estructura exterior, integrado por una cafetería y una tienda, forman parte de las labores de remodelación que ejecutan trabajadores de la Empresa de Materiales de Construcción (MICONS).

I venture into "Los Elevados," along its elevated avenue stretch, which serves as a natural viewpoint over the city. The old lampposts and electric poles draw perfect lines across this little spot that, back in the 90s, was a place of great hustle and prosperity—considered the main marketplace of Ciego de Ávila.

Now it stands as a space of loneliness and rubbish; it's sad, but that's the plain truth.

Me adentro a los Elevados, por su tramo de avenida en alto, que funciona como mirador natural a la ciudad. Las farolas antiguas y los postes eléctricos dibujan líneas perfectas, para este pedacito que fue en los 90s un lugar de gran bullicio y prosperidad, considerado el mercado principal de Ciego de Ávila.

Ahora se muestra como espacio de soledad y basurero, es triste pero la pura realidad.

Walking through the city of portals is, ultimately, an experience to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. It is not just about admiring monuments or historic buildings, but about feeling the slow rhythm of a city that preserves deep-rooted customs and a strong sense of belonging.

Between quiet streets, century-old portals, and public spaces full of life or sadness, the capital of Avila proves that there are still cities where time seems to move a little more slowly, and where every stroll becomes an invitation to rediscover the essence of Cuba.

Pasear por la ciudad de los portales es, en definitiva, una experiencia para disfrutar con calma. No se trata únicamente de admirar monumentos o edificios históricos, sino de sentir el ritmo pausado de una urbe que conserva costumbres arraigadas y un fuerte sentido de pertenencia.

Entre calles tranquilas, portales centenarios y espacios públicos llenos de vida o tristeza, la capital avileña demuestra que aún existen ciudades donde el tiempo parece transcurrir un poco más despacio y donde cada recorrido se convierte en una invitación a redescubrir la esencia de Cuba.
