_{A dragon, a fall, and a moment of chaos almost captured. 🌀}

Today I bring you my latest Holozing fan art: Drazing, the Normal-type dragon. This illustration was inspired by Zingtober's prompt “Blunder.”

Originally, I had the sketch ready for that day, but due to lack of time, I couldn't finish it. Still, I didn't want to lose the idea, and in fact I still have several sketches lying around that I want to bring to life, so I decided to go for it and turn it into a full-color digital piece.

The result? Drazing stumbling while running with a capture gun... and almost capturing himself out of sheer clumsiness.

𓂃✍︎ DRAZING: THE DRAGON THAT BLUNDERS

Even the fiercest holos can have their “oops” moments. I imagined him during a fast chase, maybe after a target or just playing around, only to misstep and stumble spectacularly, creating this chaotic, funny, yet very dynamic scene.

⏰ CREATIVE PROCESS

✏️ Phase 1: Sketch & Lineart

Like I told you before, this was a sketch for the Zingtober prompt "Blunder." So why didn’t I post it if the idea was already well-established and even the line art looked good? Well, because I wasn’t fast enough to finish each day’s piece for the challenge. I think I was too demanding on myself, and that’s why I didn’t complete many days. Plus, by the time I made this sketch, I was already about five days behind on Zingtober.

🎨 Phase 2: Grayscale

Since I was going to create a regular artwork, I went straight to filling the character with grays. You can subtly appreciate the difference in tones on the dragon, as I subdivided it into 3 layers to work comfortably when adding volume and building up its details.

For the background composition, I wanted to show a hole in the vegetation where the capture weapon's beam reached. And since I was going to have a bright area at the top of the canvas, I decided to balance it with another bright area at the bottom. This way, the viewer's attention can focus on the center where Drazing is clumsily falling.

🌗 Phase 3: From Gray to Color

Multiply, Soft Light, and Overlay—these are always my go-to blending modes for adding color to grayscale work. For the environment, I went straight to applying green, but not everywhere. I mixed in some blue to give depth to the vegetation. And speaking of blue, sure, Drazing is gray, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add a bit of color. To make its gray more striking, I used the Overlay blend mode and gave it a subtle blue tint so it stands out more in the scene.

🌟 Phase 4: Final Touches

Yes, yes, it's all nice and quick to add color to grayscale—but that’s not all the work that needed to be done. I still had to pick some brushes and paint in Normal blend mode. In other words, I had to further improve the scene by adding more details and, yes, using more blending modes to make the colors pop and everything look vibrant and beautiful. ✨
