I really do love bookstores! / やっぱり本屋さんが好き

I've loved bookstores since I was a child.

Lately, the number of physical stores has decreased, and I myself can hardly read books anymore (my concentration just doesn't last!), so my visits have become fewer. But growing up in a rural town with nothing much around, and being quite introverted during middle and high school with hardly any friends, I used to spend every free moment immersing myself in the local bookstore. I liked libraries too, but there's nothing quite like a bookstore for discovering new releases and keeping up with trends, right?

This evening, I went to Kinokuniya Bookstore to buy a textbook for my eldest son's Eiken exam. If there had been a huge bookstore like this near my home when I was a teenager, I probably would have gone there every day. Just seeing all those books piled up made me so excited. I've been in this state for years where "I buy them but hardly ever read them," but I still end up buying books anyway...

I have a Kindle, and I just resubscribed to Audible the other day, but even so, I still love bookstores the most. I don't mean to insist that "books must be on paper!" or anything like that, but I've always loved bookstores since way back, and being there just calms me down, I suppose.

Speaking of Audible, I recently discovered that there's an audiobook version of Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza — a book I bought about 10 years ago and gave up on multiple times halfway through. If someone reads it to me in audio form, maybe this time I can finally finish it! So lately, I've been listening while doing the dishes.

Whether analog or digital, audio or otherwise, I want to keep the habit of reading going — or rather, I want to reclaim it first.

子どもの頃から、本屋さんが好きです。

最近は店舗自体も減ってしまったし、私自身もほとんど本を読めなくなり（集中力が続かない！）、訪れる回数は減りましたが。何もない田舎町で育ったのと、中学・高校時代は内に篭りがちであまり友達がいなかったこともあって、暇さえあれば地元の本屋さんに入り浸っていました。図書館も好きでしたが、新刊に出会えて流行を知ることができるのは、やはり本屋さんですよね。

夕方、紀伊国屋書店に長男の英検のテキストを買いに行ってきました。10代の頃、近所にこんな大きな本屋さんがあったら、毎日のように通っていたでしょう。ただ本が大量にあるというだけでワクワクしてしまいました。「買うだけで、ほとんど読まない」という状態がもう何年も続いていますが、それでもつい買ってしまうんですよね…。

Kindleも持っていますし、Audibleも再度契約したばかりですが、それでもやはり本屋さんが好きです。本は紙だ！とこだわっているつもりはないのですが、昔から本屋さんが好きで、そこにいると落ち着くのかもしれません。

Audibleといえば、10年ほど前に買って何度も途中で挫折している『あなたという習慣を断つ』（ジョー・ディスペンザ著）のオーディオ版が出ていることに最近気づきました。音声で読み聞かせてもらえれば、今度こそ最後まで読めるかもしれない！ということで、最近は洗い物をしながら聴いています。

アナログでもデジタルでも、音声でも、読書の習慣は続けたい、というか、まずは取り戻したいです。
