The Comfort Trap
The topic for this week’s contest is ‘leaving comfort behind’. What comes to your mind when you read this?
For me leaving comfort behind means going an extra mile, doing the things that aren't inconvenient, taking risks, sticking your neck out there, and damning the consequences.
Staying in one's comfort zone can be lovely at times, you feel good and everything makes sense to you but too much comfort can be suffocating sometimes.
Speaking from experience, I get too worried and scared when I stay too long in my comfort zone.
I once had a job where I was basically not doing so much. I worked twice a week and the remaining days I just go there and do nothing or run a few errands. At first, it was nice, I couldn't relate to the stress most of my 9-5 friends were experiencing but along the line I was worried.
It got to a point where I felt useless and unproductive, I was making no impact in the company and I didn’t like it. Yes, it wasn't my fault that we didn't have so much to do in the office nor was it my fault that I was posted to such a department. It wasn’t looking good but I needed things to change, I needed to step out of my comfort zone.
Stepping out of my comfort zone while I was working in that country meant going straight to the HRM and asking that I be posted to another department and while in that department, I went all out to learn the ropes and make an impact in the company.
Eventually, leaving my comfort zone paid off. I achieved a lot from just leaving my comfort zone as against being there and enjoying all the comforts.
Truly, good things do not come easy, you don't sit wherever you want and expect manna to fall from heaven, you have to play your own part first, work hard, persevere, and one day it will pay off.
Our comfort zone feels great but we should try not to get too "comfortable".
