Yes, Yesterday I spent basically a good half of the day, troubleshooting my dishwasher. Pretty useless some might argue... but I kind of like it, plus I usually learn a lot in the process.

The problem!

Well, you might have done the same maybe...

Have you ever tried adding some detergent from either your hand washing detergent or something close to that, to your dishwasher, in the hope all those hard dirty pieces get really perfect? If yes, you might have stumbled across the same problem then (or you are about to).

Some person here at home (not me =), was really trying to get the dishes so nice, that added a decent quantity and set the machine to the hottest and longest program...

GUESS WHAT!

Yes! FOAM PARTY!!!!

Not really...

The worse is not actually the cleanup, it is the fact that usually when the machine produces that much foam, it will almost certainly overheat. This happens because all the foam created carries lot's of tiny amounts of water, rendering the bottom of your dishwasher dry (or with very little water), and then the thermostat will eventually trigger a failsafe mechanism to disable the heat resistor.

Some machines might have enough logic to return back to a safe state throughout sensors or debug tests, but mine or most dishwashers I would say, are not that smart and the result is a dishwasher that still works, but does not HEAT WATER!!!

What then?

Call someone to get it fixed right?

That's at least a few hours of waiting... plus you need to stick around to let the person evaluate the problem and then fix it. And then pay for the job! If you are renting, you usually don't have to pay, but you will have to wait a lot longer.

Solution

You don't really need to call someone unless you think the following steps are too hard for you to do:

• Empty your dishwasher and close it.
• Pull it from the usual confined space, somewhere else and unplug/turn off any electrical plugs.
• Turn the dishwasher 90º degrees (revealing the bottom of it) - Beware some water might leak from inside the machine.
• Then look for something similar and bellow the same position as the sensor you see inside the dishwasher:
  
• Press the reset button (that would feel something like stuck before you press it). Done!

Put the machine back in the usual place, and remember! Only use detergent/capsules made for dishwashers.
