I have never though this would happen this fast! 🤯
How many of you have bought NVMe(s) last year, and how many didn't?
I bought a couple in the last 2 years, to be honest, but this was the most expensive one I bought by then, when I was trying to build my Hive API node (prices in NZD).
And by then (2 years ago, around February 2024), I was thinking, "dang, this is probably going to be a mistake, and I should wait another few months for the Gen5 version".
Well, the answer is yes, and no. If I had waited for the Gen5 ones, I would have made an even better deal for a single NVMe, but at the same time I would have bought fewer of them with the budget I had (because I got other cheaper NVMe, from a Christmas sales period a few months before).
And if you didn't know that there is a world shortage on Memory components worldwide happening since last year, around @hivefest dates, then hop into this website and check for yourself the crappy moments we will have to endure for probably a couple more years.
And I regret not buying another pair of 96GB DDR5 last year, to add up to my current existing ones, or build another node. Because that alone was brutal (more below).
All of this because of AI... or more realistically, because of NVIDIA not having any competitors and monopolising the market to their own interests.
And more recently, since the beginning of the year, it's NVMes!
So, how much is this NVMe specifically today? Yep... It's this much!!!
It's surreal, and I even dealt with Companies that harvested lots of these for recycling or "re-sell" and if they didn't sold/recycled them in late 2024, they would have made a ton of money now.
But wait, what about memory? Even worse!
The 96GB I got 2 years ago...
NOW!
(or rather not, because they vanished from the market)
That's nearly 400% increase!
This is crazy... and the worst part is that it might get worse this year. And please don't take this as "computer parts" advice.
Having a PC nowadays might become a luxury only a few can afford. I could definitely not afford it right now, so in a sense, I am happy for having purchased things while they were still "their normal price".
Why can't we have the same demand on Hive?
