When passion for sport meets health challenges [ESP-ENG]

Hello, dear motherhood@motherhood community, I want to share with you the story of my son Santiago, an athlete currently passionate about athletics. For the past three months, he has been facing an unexpected situation with a torn hamstring. What does this mean? According to what the orthopedist explained to me, it's when muscle fibers are stretched beyond their capacity. It's a common injury in sports that require vigorous movements, such as athletics.

It all started in March, when a bad movement during a competition caused him discomfort while running hard. At first, his coach didn't give it much importance and only recommended ice packs. But when I saw that the discomfort persisted, I looked for options and finally took him to a recommended therapy center, where he received his first session and felt better

Confident that he was feeling better, I decided to make an appointment with the IPASME orthopedic surgeon, which was scheduled for 45 days. During that time, Santiago continued to experience some discomfort, which made us wonder if we had made the best decision. Finally, during the consultation, the orthopedic surgeon diagnosed a muscle tear after his evaluation and recommended that we see a physical therapist to begin therapy.

Currently, we are in the rehabilitation process with the physical therapist. It has been extremely exhausting because we can't afford the therapies, which are around $40 each, so we had to opt for public care, and believe me, it hasn't been pleasant at all. After he finishes his classes, we go to the therapies, and while waiting for them to see him, it can take up to 4 hours. Not to mention that I've been going very early every day to make the appointment. In addition, he has to eat half an hour before and then can't eat or drink water until after 2 hours of therapy, which isn't fully adhered to because he never knows for sure when he's going to be seen.

But we are confident and hope that Santiago can once again feel happy in the sport he loves so much. And while it's true that he isn't preparing for the Olympics, the ideal would be for him to enjoy what he loves without pain or worries.

These have been very worrying days because Santiago has two upcoming trips to compete in other states and represent Nueva Esparta State. At the same time, he is in the final stretch of the school year, full of evaluations, which has been a distraction, but still a concern for him.

Being a mother means fighting every day for the well-being of our children, and in this process, I have felt great frustration. I would like to do more to alleviate Santiago's discomfort, to speed up his recovery, to prevent all the inconveniences he faces. However, I have encountered the difficulties of the public health system that we all know, in addition to the financial limitations, where wait times are long and access to treatment is not always convenient or timely.

Sometimes, I feel helpless as the days go by, and all I can offer is support and companionship. And I know that while I can't change the system, I can be by his side, encouraging him, listening to him, and reminding him that he's not alone in this process and that everything he goes through is for a reason.

It reassures me a little that he's doing well with the therapies and isn't in pain. He's already completed the first phase and is entering the second. I trust that he'll soon be discharged and back on the path he loves so much. The strength he's shown is admirable, and of course, the support we've given him as a family throughout this process.

Dear friends, this post is a relief; it's my way of letting out my sadness and frustrations. I only ask God for patience and that everything passes soon. Nothing is easy. But I also know that challenges are what truly leave us with valuable lessons, lessons that last a lifetime. True friends, thank you for reading. Greetings and blessings.

Saludos y Bendiciones.
