Tsunami - The Venezuelan Hero - Acrylic painting [ENG-ESP]

Venezuela is going through difficult times—an apocalyptic, horror-movie scenario I never imagined witnessing so close to home, yet one with consequences and effects so devastating that I feel an emotional earthquake in every fiber of my being. My creativity went dormant, just like the normal life I used to lead; I have spent every day glued to the news, particularly looking for reports of survivors being found. The terrible earthquake of June 24th taught me a great deal—especially the humility to recognize that we are merely passing through this world and must cherish the journey alongside our loved ones. Amidst so much pain, a ray of hope has emerged thanks to Tsunami, a beautiful dog who, together with his rescue team, has found many people alive beneath the rubble; my creativity, previously on hold, found a symbol of hope in this beautiful creature—a symbol that we Venezuelans now share. I have created a painting to pay tribute to this furry friend who helped with rescue efforts and is now receiving international aid, thanks to the solidarity of so many people around the world. Venezuela está pasando por momentos difíciles, una película de terror y apocalíptica que jamás pensé ver tan cera, pero que sus consecuencias y efectos son tan devastadores que siento un terremoto emocional en cada fibra de mi ser. Mi creatividad se apagó así como la vida normal que llevaba, todos los días los he pasado conectado a las noticias, especialmente donde encuentren a personas vivas. El terrible terremoto sufrido el 24 de junio me ha enseñado mucho, especialmente la humildad de reconocer de que en este mundo solo somos pasajeros y que debemos disfrutar el viaje junto a nuestro seres queridos. Dentro de tanto dolor el rayo de esperanza ha crecido gracias a Tsunami, un hermoso canino que junto a su equipo rescatista han encontrado a muchas personas vivas bajo los escombros, la creatividad que se encontraba en pausa encontró en esta bella criatura un símbolo de esperanza el cual ahora tenemos los venezolanos. He realizado una pintura para homenajear a este amigo peludo que ha ayudado en las labores de rescate y que ahora cuenta con ayuda internacional gracias a la solidaridad de tantos pueblos en el mundo. I used a canvas I had been holding onto for a long time; it measures 25 centimeters wide by 30 centimeters high. I sketched Tsunami in pencil and then applied a layer of brown acrylic paint mixed with water. I’ve seen various painters use this technique and wanted to try it out; the idea is that it’s easier than painting directly onto a blank canvas, and it certainly yielded good results. I started by painting the nose, focusing on capturing the finest details to make it look truly realistic.

Utilicé un lienzo que tenía guardado desde hace mucho tiempo, mide 25 centímetros de ancho por 30 centímetros de alto. Hice el boceto de Tsunami con lápiz para luego pasar una capa de pintura acrílica de color café mezclada con agua. Esta técnica la he visto mucho en algunos pintores y quise probarla, según es más fácil hacerlo de esta manera que pintar directamente sobre el lienzo en blanco, y la verdad que dio buenos resultados. Comencé pintando la nariz, tratando de hacerle los mínimos detalles para que luciera bien realista.

As I mentioned earlier, applying a layer of paint mixed with water is a brilliant idea; it looks different while you're painting, and the paint pigments appear distinct. Here, for instance, I started painting the eyes—one of which shows heterochromia, as it is white, perhaps due to a Husky ancestor.

Como mencioné antes, el haberle puesto un capa de pintura mezclada con agua es una idea genial, se siente diferente a la vista al momento de pintar y se observan diferentes los pigmentos de las pinturas. Aquí por ejemplo comencé a pintar sus ojos, los cuales en una de ellos tiene heterocromía ya que uno de sus ojos es blanco, tal vez de un antepasado Husky.

Next, I begin painting the entire mouth, including the teeth and the huge tongue. This dog breed is very intelligent—I’ve read a lot about them; they are even used alongside herding dogs because they are good at understanding commands. During the earthquake, Tsunami did an amazing job tracking through the rubble and finding over 100 survivors—a true legend.

Seguidamente comienzo a pintar toda su boca, incluyendo sus dientes y su enorme lengua. Esta raza de perro es muy inteligente, leí mucho acerca de ellos, también los usan con perros ovejeros por que son buenos para entender las ordenes. Y en este terremoto Tsunami ha hecho un gran trabajo de rastreo entre los escombro encontrando a más de 100 personas con vida, toda una leyenda.

Next, I began painting his entire coat white; however, it is not a pure white but rather a blend with brown to create shading between the individual tufts of fur. I also painted the orange rescue vest—bearing the Venezuelan flag—that he wears on his missions. For the background, I used shades of blue with varying contrasts, as the blue of the sky represents, to me, the hope of rebirth.

Después comencé a pintar todo su pelaje de colro blanco, pero este blanco no es puro sino que está mezclado con color cafe para darle sombra entre cada mechón de pelo. Así también he pintado el chaleco de rescate color naranja identificado con la bandera de Venezuela, que utiliza para realizar las misiones. En el fondo hice algo de color azul con varios contraste, porque el azul del cielo representa para mi la esperanza del renacimiento.

What do you think of the result? The acrylic shades are undoubtedly very vibrant, and they really helped me achieve this look. Now, I’m trying to get in touch with the Tsunami rescue team because I want to gift them this painting—that was my intention from the very beginning. ¿Qué les ha parecido el resultado? sin duda los tonos acrílicos son muy vivos y me ayudaron a lograr este resultado.
