Al mojado, échale agua. [Es-En] If it's wet, pour water on it.

If it's wet, pour water on it.

That's what they say in eastern Venezuela, with the same meaning as the old saying, "We were few, and then Grandma gave birth."

It seems the calamities suffered by the people of Venezuela never end. I can't help but remember the Vargas mudslide, now in La Guaira State. A tragedy that the unmentionable one tried to hide so as not to tarnish the elections that day.

Misfortune after misfortune from 1999 until today, when the earth trembles with unprecedented fury. It shook twice in a row. According to witnesses, it was interminable. A mere two minutes that surely felt like an eternity for those who, I imagine, could barely stand.

Absent from Venezuela for two years, I keep in touch with family and friends, hoping for changes. After January 3rd, it was hoped that everything would improve, but for most, it seems not.
They released some political prisoners, but not all; today they allowed the use of social network X, and perhaps some other things are better. But economically, and regarding police extortion, it seems nothing has improved.

The city of Cumaná, where I lived, has been without running water for four months. The population has to carry water from tankers that distribute it in the streets at the discretion of the authorities, or pay for private service when only a trickle of water reaches some pipes in the lowest-lying areas.

Four months without real news or reliable official announcements. The causes of the pipeline collapse are not even known; according to some, they dynamited it in an attempt to unblock it. The worst possible solution to the problem; of course, some versions suggest the explosions were an attempt to discover a gold vein near the reservoir.

Someday, perhaps, the truth will come out about so many atrocities committed out of arrogance and incompetence, coupled with an infinite greed devoid of all moral scruples. For some believers, these are divine punishments for sins committed, but that cannot be. The punishment falls on the least guilty, while the majority continue to enjoy the fruits of their crimes.

Only God knows what will become of that land, once a land of grace.

At the feet of Jesus Christ, I offer my prayer for all Venezuelans of goodwill who are suffering today, both within and outside their nation.

As always, I write in Spanish and use Google Translate for the English version. The images are my own work and property.
