A falta de pan, buenos son libros y caminar [Es-En] If you can't have bread, books and walking will do.

If you can't have bread, books and walking will do.

One day, two days, three days... A jump. I didn't make it to the appointment that day.

Another day without filling a block in the chain.

Five days, six, seven, eight.

There are days when the outside world is more appealing, and upon returning, there's no energy left to share a few words. On one such day, though cloudy, I set out to explore a new direction, hoping to find a bakery with a three-quarter-century history. Sourdough bread with 75 years of history, a family tradition that crossed an ocean.

Santa Ana was closed, so I moved on. Later, I learned that it's a family that kneads and bakes early. They sell the bread before noon, and around 1 p.m., Santa María closes.

Although I haven't confirmed it, this couple pictured in black and white must be the founders who brought the recipe for "pan de hueso" (bone bread) from the mountains facing the Cantabrian Sea, and undoubtedly some other sweet treats as well.

A short distance away, I found another place to stop, to visit this charming shop where I can give my inner child a break, the one who's just waiting for a chance to come out and play.

After wandering the aisles and seeing the current trends in toys, where the new meets the traditional... Given my tastes, I lingered longer in front of the chemistry sets and scooters, missing the tracks and trains.

I didn't dare ask why. Considering I wasn't planning on buying anything, I took another picture of the entrance as I left.

Changing direction, I crossed the street, leaving the avenue behind, to stop in front of another shop window that caught my eye.

A bookstore whose name I didn't bother to look at, but it will be easy to find when I go to buy a book. The owner offered me at a reasonable price, and also the option of paying in installments or getting a discount for paying in cash.

From there, I headed to have coffee with someone very special, but since it was early, I ended up zigzagging around every corner, only to have to backtrack a few blocks to reach our meeting place.

During the walk, my phone battery died, and I stopped taking pictures, or, as the Persian poets say, the veil of intimacy was lifted.

Since I'll soon be retiring, I'll tell you about some other things that have been on my mind tomorrow.
