Tried 199 samgyeopsal but it turned out to be so unexpected
After walking around the streets of Baguio, we came across a samgyup house. Samgyeopsal, for those who don’t know, is the Korean word for pork barbecue, but it has become a term for unlimited Korean barbecue, where you pay a fixed price for unlimited meat and side dishes or banchan.
I have never tried samgyup for 199 before, since I usually prefer authentic Korean samgyeopsal with beef, which is more costly. So I was really excited when I saw that we could have it for only 199 pesos.
Here are the side dishes we got:
Sweet stir-fried fish cakes.
Potato marbles, also known as gamja jorim.
Kimchi, something that should always be present.
Japchae
Lettuce
Pork sisig.
I was surprised why this restaurant had pork sisig as a side dish, because we usually have this as a main dish or pulutan for beer LOL.
They also had hotdogs and radish kimchi, but it didn’t taste like the authentic one. I felt like I was going to get drunk because it tasted very fermented.
When we started cooking the barbecue, it was not what I expected. Most of the meat was fatty and it was hard to grill. I just depended on my friend and let him do the cooking.
The only side dish I liked was their kimchi, which I enjoyed a lot.
I was also looking for gochujang and sesame oil, but there was none. But then, it was very cheap, so what did I expect? I realized that it is always important to pay for the premium ones if you want better taste.
The good thing though about this Korean Barbeque place is that the side dishes and meats are already there and customers can get whatever they want and get their own refill unlike other restaurants which you have to wait for the waiters to refill your side dishes and meat which usually takes a lot of time.
The Samgyup 199 experience may not be what I expected when it comes to taste but I’m just glad I was with friends and enjoyed being with them after a long time of not meeting up. That’s what made the experience good.
