we are fortunate to have red whiskered bulbuls Pycnonotus jocosus nesting in our garden and occasionally around the house as well. their mix of loud, bright and cheery songs often wakes us in the morning. their friendly nature and habits make them a real pleasure to have nearby. they are perhaps the bird we know that is most closely associated with positive energy. so we make sure to keep bowls of clean water easily accessible to them. there's always some fruit in season for them- especially chickoos near the house. in turn they help themselves to the mosquitoes and other insects as in these photos.
they are easily to identify, the males and females are quite similar with the red whiskers or cheeks and black crest. viewed from below their orange vent complements the red cheek and gives them a very attractive appearance. the orange colored vent indicates that this bird is a juvenile. adults have a red vent- the same color as the red patch under the eye. they can often be seen perching on this wire with the mango tree in the background and don't shy away when we take photos. of course they perch in the trees as well but they are particularly photogenic drinking water or taking a bath.
they make simple nests seemingly anywhere and we are sometimes surprised that a nest seems carelessly placed vulnerable to predators but they thrive in the garden so they must be doing fine anyway
i took these shots with my S22 phone. please do not share them without my consent
