entry smash 437: inside the Seamen's Memorial Hall
yesterday, August 1, 2026 marked 100 years since the opening of the Seamen's Memorial Hall overlooking the sea here in Stavern.
"The Seamen’s Memorial Hall is Norway’s official memorial in commemoration of the seafarers who perished during the First and the Second World War. In the crypt of the memorial, 8000 names of Norwegian and foreign deceased seafarers are engraved into copper plates." source https://minnehallen.no/ of course theplates with the names from the second world war were added later.
the copper plates listing the names of the people and ships are mounted in the downstairs section on the outer walls of the pyramid shaped stone building.
in the center of that hall there is a coffin with a norwegian flag draped over it in memory for all the fallen seamen who never received a proper burial. along with the coffin is a statue of a wave shaped in the form of a giant hand in the process of pulling down a victim to his watery grave.
in today's world those wars still cast shadows that would be wise for all to consider
