Foraging for Bilberries and Plums!

It's bilberry season at the moment, so we went back on the moors this morning to pick some to make a pie with. It's strange as I see people picking blackberries, but I very rarely see people picking bilberries.

Perhaps it's because they're not as sweet or just don't realise that amongst the lovely heather lies delicious fruit. We didn’t do too bad in the end.

It was yet another up and down day weatherwise. One minute, the sun was out, and a few minutes later, it was dull and overcast.

August is a good time to see the lovely purple heather but there's only a few weeks of the year that the heather is in flower. It is beginning to die off now until next year.

We also spotted a few plums at the side of the road. Some of them were ripe and had already dropped off the tree, but others, like their name suggests, might have blown off in the wind before they had ripened.

It would have been a shame to waste them so we can always make chutney with the unripened ones.

We just need to find some more sloes now to make slow gin. Hopefully, this week.
