This is one of the rarest butterflies for me to find.

Esta es una de las mariposas menos frecuentes de encontrar para mí.

It belongs to the family Riodinidae, native to the Neotropics, whose members have been little studied.

Pertenece a la familia Riodinidae, nativa del Neotrópico, cuyos miembros han sido poco estudiados.

Among the few things that are known about them is the fact that they associate with ants in their larval stage (Myrmecophily)

Entre lo poco que se sabe de ellas está el hecho de que se asocian con hormigas en estadio de larva (Mirmecofilia)

They do this seeking protection, while also providing the ants, which herd them, with a safe source of nectar.

Lo hacen buscando protección, a la vez que brindan a las hormigas, que las pastorean, una fuente segura de néctar.

The scientific name of this species is Rhetus arcius

El nombre científico de esta especie es Rhetus arcius

It is medium-sized, with a wingspan of about 6 centimeters, with black and white stripes, red spots, and tail-like extensions on the hind wings.

Es mediana, de unos 6 centímetros de envergadura alar, de franjas blancas y negras con manchas rojas y extensiones parecidas a colas en las alas traseras.

It stayed in the same position the whole time. I hope someday I can take pictures where it can be seen better.
