[En-Es] Pyrophorus punctatissimus

Hello friends.
This strange insect appeared in our hallway last night.

Hola amigos.
Anoche apareció este raro insecto en nuestro corredor.

It was perched on a stone that we used as a weight for exercises.

Estaba posado sobre una piedra que usamos como pesa para ejercicios.

It was approximately 2 centimeters long and brown in color.

Medía 2 centímetros de largo aproximadamente y era color marrón.

We discovered two little lights that were activated when touched.

Descubrimos dos lucecitas que se activaban al tocarlo.

It is a beetle of the genus piropholus, family Elateridae

Es un escarabajo del género piropholus, familia Elateridae

The beetles of this family are characterized by emitting a clicking sound and some are bioluminescent

Los coleópteros de esta familia se caracterizan por emitir un sonido de click y algunos son bioluminiscentes

The sound they make is due to structures in their body that rub against and propel them when they need to move quickly.

El sonido que hacen se deben a estructuras en su cuerpo que rozan y los impulsan cuando necesitan moverse rápidamente.

Adults eat pollen, while larvae eat plant debris, however some members of this genus are said to be polyphagous.

Los adultos comen polen, mientras que las larvas comen restos vegetales, sin embargo se dice que algunos miembros de este género son polífagos.

Their eggs and larvae also have bioluminescence.

Sus huevos y sus larvas tienen también bioluminiscencia.

In addition to these two points on the sides of the pronotum, they emit light through a larger abdominal organ, which is only visible during flight.

Además de en esos dos puntos a los lados del pronoto, emiten luz por medio de un órgano abdominal, más grande, que sólo se aprecia durante el vuelo.

They live in the Neotropics and, despite having properties similar to those of fireflies, they are not related to them.

Viven en el neotrópico y, a pesar de tener propiedades semejantes a las de las luciérnagas, no están emparentados con ellas.
