[En-En] A tailless papilionidae

Papilio anchisiades is a large butterfly species that lives in the humid forests of our Neotropics. Its distribution ranges from the southern United States to Argentina.

Papilio anchisiades es una especie de mariposa grande que vive en los bosques húmedos de nuestro Neotrópico. Se distribuye desde el sur de Estados Unidos hasta la Argentina.

Unlike other species of the family papilionidae, these do not have the typical swallowtail-like extensions. It is black with red spots on the body and hind wings, which is why it is also called the "red-spotted comet.

A diferencia de otras especies de la familia papilionidae, estas no tienen las prolongaciones parecidas a colas de golondrina típicas. Es negra con manchas rojas en el cuerpo y alas trsseras, por eso tambien es llamada "cometa de manchas rojas".

They measure about 7 centimeters in wingspan and, as larvae, feed on plants from the rutacese family (citrus and murraya). Adults feed on flower nectar.

Miden alrededor de 7 centímetros de envergadura y en estadio de larva se alimentan de plantas de la familia rutacese (cítricos y murraya). Los adultos se alimentan del néctar de las flores.

These photos were taken by me at three different times, a few years apart. The first time they looked for zinnia flowers.

Estas fotos han sido tomadas por mi en tres momentos distintos, con diferencia de pocos años. La primera vez buscaron flores de zinnia.

On the next two occasions it was the 💐 cariaquito flowers that attracted them.

En las dos ocasiones siguientes han sido las 💐 flores de cariaquito lo que las atrajo.
