Reflexiones de "Venezuela, país de terremotos"/Reflections on "Venezuela, Land of Earthquakes"
It is when I am far away that I feel the deepest love for my country and my homeland. I enjoy writing, and when I speak of Venezuela, I realize there is so much to say.
The events of the Vargas Tragedy in 1999 caused me great pain; the national mourning that followed was deeply unsettling. Years earlier, my mother had told me about the 1967 earthquake—when my older brother was just a newborn—describing that calamity as an ordeal no one should ever have to endure. Caracas, usually a quiet city, shook violently without warning; people screamed in the streets amidst a quake that claimed many victims—though my mother managed to survive it.
On June 24, 2026—coinciding with the commemoration of the Battle of Carabobo—two tremors struck my country, shaking it for several seconds. Measuring over 7 on the Richter scale, cities like Caracas and La Guaira were hit hard by the seismic activity, which continues to produce aftershocks to this day. Now, we face the challenge of responding to this event. We in the city of Guanare, located in the country's interior, are fortunate, as we suffered no physical damage worth lamenting.

En el 1999, me dolió muchísimo, aquellos sucesos de la Tragedia de Vargas, donde el luto nacional fue algo muy perturbador. Hacía algunos años que mi mamá me contó del Terremoto del año 1967, cuando mi hermano mayor era el único recién nacido y me describió aquel infortunio como algo que no se le desea a nadie. Caracas una ciudad tranquila, temblaba sin razones y la gente gritaba en las calles en medio de un terremoto que dejó muchas víctimas, de las cuales mi progenitora puedo sobrevivir…
El día 24 de junio de 2026, en el marco de la celebración de la Batalla de Carabobo, dos temblores azotaron por varios segundos a mi país. Con más de 7 grados en la Escala Ritchter, ciudades como Caracas y La Guaira, fueron zonas muy golpeadas por los movimientos telúricos que, a esta fecha, aún sigue teniendo réplicas. Hoy nos enfrentamos a un nuevo desafío para salir al paso de este evento. It is essential to understand that Venezuela is a seismic zone due to well-known geological characteristics—a fact we cannot change. However, we can change how we respond to such phenomena. We must better equip ourselves with awareness and knowledge regarding survival, first aid, and resilience. We also need to manage the content we consume on social media; while it provides information, it can also cause significant agitation and anxiety—especially when compounded by the worry of having family members who remain unaccounted for during a tragedy.
Is Venezuela prepared to face earthquakes?
History and our experience with past natural disasters show that, despite being in a high-risk seismic zone, we still have a great deal to learn. We are at fault for failing to keep even a basic first-aid kit, for lacking knowledge on emotional control during such crises, and for not having a supply of potable water or non-perishable food on hand for survival. This is not a political or even an economic issue; it is a matter of social responsibility and prevention. We need to approach this with greater good sense and awareness—treating it as a personal matter that can be managed at the family level—because there is a massive gap in the information provided by schools or community organizations. It is a subject that will always require debate, analysis, and reflection—an ongoing conversation that never truly ends.

Es necesario entender que Venezuela es una zona sísmica por las características geológicas que ya todos sabemos, eso no lo podemos cambiar, pero lo que si podemos cambiar es la manera de actuar frente a este tipo de fenómenos. Debemos blindarnos más de conciencia y conocimiento en materia de sobrevivencia, primeros auxilios y resiliencia. Controlando la apreciación de contenido en redes sociales, que más allá de informarnos, nos puede alterar y preocupar mucho más si a esto le sumamos posibles familiares que aún no aparezcan en medio de esta tragedia.
¿Estamos preparados en Venezuela para afrontar sismos?
La experiencia nos dice por historia que al estar en una zona de riesgo sísmico y en base a lo vividos en desastres naturales, nos falta mucho por aprender. Y somos culpables de no tener por lo menos un botiquín de primeros auxilios, desconocer los principios de control emocional en estos casos y por lo menos tener un bidón de agua potable o alimentos perecederos para sobrevivir. No es un problema político, ni siquiera económico, acá hablamos de un problema de carácter social y preventivo. Deberíamos tener mayor cordura y conciencia sobre ello, en un asunto personal que podemos manejar desde lo familiar porque la deuda de informarnos desde la escuela o lo comunitario, por ejemplo, es gigantesca. Es un tema que siempre será de debate, análisis y reflexión que nunca terminará de ser abordado.

Do we see human values that foster the healthy growth of our children? Is it worth sharing the various posts we see on social media regarding this issue? This is a matter that can touch on sensitivities and vulnerabilities. We must answer these questions for ourselves while also considering how—as Venezuelans or simply as human beings—we are affected by the sheer volume of information, which can sometimes be overwhelming.
May God have mercy on those affected by disasters around the world. May nature correct its imbalances, and may we find greater humanity and understanding; after all, as unbelievable as these situations may seem, they could happen to anyone. To paraphrase Alí Primera: We hope “…that humanity becomes more humane.” Until next time. God bless you…

Es un tema muy subjetivo y depende de cada quien, ante esto podemos preguntarnos: ¿Las Redes Sociales contribuyen a mejorar la situación? ¿Benefician al colectivo afectado por desastres naturales? ¿Observamos valores humanos que contribuyen al sano crecimiento de nuestros hijos? ¿Vale la pena replicar las diversas publicaciones que observamos en las redes sociales sobre este tema? Este es un asunto que puede generar susceptibilidades y vulnerabilidades. Y dentro de esto, debemos respondernos y a la misma vez, revisar en que nos beneficia como venezolano o como humano, por el manejo de tanta información, que puede llegar incluso a abrumarnos.
Ojalá Dios tenga piedad con las personas damnificadas del mundo. Que la naturaleza corrija sus defectos y podamos tener mayor humanidad y comprensión porque estas situaciones, aunque parezcan increíbles le pueden tocar a cualquiera.
