Welcome to the First Modern Age
While I was walking along the banks of the Danube River, in the Belgrade neighborhood of Vinča, I enjoyed the view of the river.
A wide expanse of water, with small boats and large ferries rocking on the waves.
A few anglers were trying out their skills by deep-sea fishing for perch, without a float, and I didn't want to stay back, not to "scare the fish" to him.
My goal was a small restaurant overlooking the coast where I met my friends for lunch.
After lunch, I was heading to my car, when my eyes fell on a billboard: Welcome to the First Modern Age.
I had some free time, so why not visit this site.
Vinča and the locality Belo brdo (so called because of the light color of the stone), is a place that was inhabited by the first modern people in the Neolithic period from 5300 - 4500 BC.
Unlike previous cultures, which were predominantly nomadic, the Vinča culture led to the formation of settlements that lasted for several centuries, which can be concluded from the layers on the excavations in the area.
The people who lived in those settlements at that time were organized and engaged in activities that led to the emergence of trade.
They lived in houses built of wooden beams and mud.
They produced stone and clay products, and what is important for this period is the fact that they started working with metals, smelting the first ore right here.
Serbian archaeologist Miloje Vasic participated in the discovery of this site, which today does not show much (I probably would have seen more if I had entered the museum, but there was no time for that tour), and I hope that the project displayed on this billboard will be realized, so that all visitors can get to know the life of this modern man from Vinča culture, who led the creation of today's modern world.
I will definitely take a walk again to Vinča and Belo Brdo on my next walk and visit the current exhibition in the museum, but that will be left for another time.
Now I'm going home to find out more about this period on the website www.vincaculture.rs
