EQUALITY

Beauty talks down to me
and I accept
smiling or turning my head slightly away
showing acceptance of the act
as if nodding

She, of course, interprets the motion
as one of attraction
for she knows herself that her
shell is pleasing to the eye
she did go out of her way
to talk to me
and after all
who am I
to look up at her

Maturity and intelligence
perhaps she has neither
but does that matter when all that life has to offer
is at her beck and call
with the wink of an eye
a toss of her hair
and the height of her dress
she possesses the tools
with which she can build a life of choice
while the rest of us
just
watch
and nod

Ugliness talks to me and I am ashamed
ashamed that I would have never engaged the conversation
tortured that the yolk she possesses that can
lift spirits
cure sickness
and move mountains
would have remained
undisturbed

That is the greatest tragedy
or should I say reality
that looks can take you around the world
and personality alone will rarely open a door
that the rare combination
of beauty and personality
is rendered to the elite

The elite few
who are able to see beyond
beyond the crust to the core
and treat each other equally

These are the people
worthy of respect
worthy of love
and
worthy of life
