What Shapes Our Life Outlook?
I expect most people's experience of going through life is fairly similar, at least in the sense that we come across people who seem to be eternally positive and we come across people who are eternally negative.
Naturally, there also many of us who fit somewhere in the middle, being positive about some things and negative about others.
That said, most people I have met seem to have a "basic setting", if you will, that determines what their outlook on life is. That makes me wonder what exactly shapes that outlook on life.
One of the things I've noticed is that you can often find people who have had extremely difficult lives and yet they have a perpetually positive outlook on life; they still believe everything's going to work out well.
On the other hand, you also have those who seem to get everything in life handed to them on a plate, and yet they have a very negative perception of life. So there's no rhyme or reason there.
I have to think that our outlook in life has a lot less to do with our fortune than it does with just random acts of luck or lack of luck.
You know, for example, two people jump off an equally tall roof to escape a fire and one hits the pavement hard and ends up with several broken bones and extensive skin abrasions, while the other lands on an awning and walks away without a scratch even though their situations were virtually identical.
Naturally each has a unique experience that shapes how they might view tall buildings in the future; their perceptions of the dange level is certain to be different.
But I think it also has something to do with how well we learn from our experiences. That is to say, some people have to be smacked over the head with the "universal 2x4" dozens of times before the lesson sinks in, while others? Well, all they have to do is be hit once and they decide that that was a bad deal and they'll never touch it again!
I've always tended to fall in the latter category, perhaps learning my lessons too quickly rather than giving things another chance to succeed.
But that hasn't always held uniformly true; it can be more situational. For example when it comes to people and relationships I give them very many more chances than is perhaps healthy while with events and activities I give them far fewer chances than is perhaps healthy.
Once again, we find ourselves with a situation that can't really be analyzed with logic.
So what's really my point here? Well, I think the main thing I'm drawing attention to here is that there is no such thing as one size fits all, and so lots of the ostensible advice, expertise and wisdom that is out in the world can't generally be applied with a broad brush.
Sure, such basic recommendations as "look both ways before you cross a busy highway" is probably pretty universal but when it comes to making individual choices none of that really matters anymore... it all becomes dependent on the individual, their life experience and what they expect to get out of life.
I think flexibility also has a lot to do with it. Some people are very flexible in terms of their willingness and ability to adapt to constantly changing conditions, while others struggle enormously with it.
Which brings me to the strange phenomenon of people following "movements" with almost religious fervor, even though the movement doesn't necessarily "represent" to any great extent.
I don't get it.
