Defective and Deceptive Sushi!

While Mrs. Denmarkguy and I do virtually all our own cooking at home — after all, who can afford to eat out anymore — one of the treats we occasionally will get is some sushi.

Now, I'm sure there will be some purists reading this who will declare that "it isn't Sushi unless it's made fresh to order at a sushi counter", but we don't all have availability of that nor the pocketbook to afford it.

So we occasionally will pick up some pre-packaged Sushi from our local supermarket. And it's really quite good and fresh... most of the time.

That dependency has mostly to do with which supermarket chain we're getting it from. What we have learned, over the years, is to only get our sushi from our local Safeway store, which has a dedicated Sushi counter where there is actually a Japanese-Filipino sushi maker who creates the sushi and stocks the coolers on a constant basis during the day.

Now, the local Kroger supermarket also has a dedicated sushi cooler which is quite well stocked with attractive looking sushi, all bearing the assurance that it is "made fresh daily."

However, every time we've tried it, it has been a rather miserable experience in which we only need a mouthful of two to establish that it is not very fresh and not very good. This in spite of the label insisting "made fresh daily."

It takes a little digging around and reading the small print to discover that it may indeed be made fresh daily but it is made "fresh daily" in the town of Farmers Branch, Texas which is about 2,200 miles from where we are!

It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that making some sushi, packaging it and then airlifting it across the country to a distribution center from where it is subsequently sent out to individual stores is not going to leave you with incredibly fresh sushi!

Hence the "defective" sushi.

The deceptive part is the fact that it is in fact made fresh daily just not on site. And so we end up with this rather stale and unpleasant experience. And yes we are exercising our right as consumers to no longer buy it.

It just saddens me that a lot of people undoubtedly do buy this quite delicious looking sushi and end up with the disappointing experience or also sadly might not even know what fresh sushi is and consider this substandard product to be the way it is supposed to be.

But then again aren't a lot of products marketed with a certain amount of deception?
