May Day Y'all

Here in the US, we have us a Labor Day in September because the federal government was afraid that if we celebrated May Day here, it wouldn't be good for them or their fat cat patrons.

The fat cats have had a stranglehold on politicians and working people for far too long here, which might have something to do with the record levels of inequality.

The worker bees might have something to say about that. . .

Despite the well-to-do and the well intoxicated folks fixation on horses running in ovals, hundreds turned out for multiple events marking May Day here in Louisville on Friday.

The unions and our local Democratic Socialists of American chapter put one on at Injustice Square Park downtown, followed shortly after by one at the Louisville Tool Library put together by the Party for Socialism & Liberation and an assortment of other groups.

There was also a 'Bread and Roses Gala' that yours truly skipped out on, the two were more than enough food, fun, music and speeches for one day.

Especially with the street photography extravaganza that is the Kentucky Derby the very next day.

As much as anything, the day's festivities were about building community, solidarity. Same thing really.

Was by far the most people that'd partook in May Day here in many years, seems the community building efforts are starting to bear fruit. The regime's sundry transgressions may have thrown napalm on the fire as well.

It's curious how people's participation ebbs and flows. Not just with politics either, the same plays out here on HIVE.

Well, except it's the good times that greens this place up, whereas it's the lean times that turns May Day into a riot.

Friday wasn't anything like a riot, closer to a block party.

The people's party!
