There is nothing bad when you unlearn
We are already in the last quarter of the year. To be honest, it was so fast; I can’t believe that the first half of the year has already come and gone. To be honest, I have not thought in this direction of things that I have unlearned before. We often spend time talking about the things we learn and how we achieve new milestones, but we neglect to appreciate the value we unlearn. Many times we think that growth is all about acquiring more knowledge; rather, it is about letting go of some beliefs and some certain ways of thinking.
Seeing this prompt, I went into reflection, and I got to understand that I have unlearned something, but I have not really paid close attention to it. I enter this year with the mindset that for me to be productive, I need to be busy. Along the line I get to find out that constant work without rest will make me exhausted and less effective. I really think that giving myself some break doesn't mean I am lazy; rather, it is important that I stay healthy and do my best at work.
Probably you see yourself in the category of people that have spent years trying to please everyone that comes your way; you say yes when you should say no. You are so worried about what people will say about you, but you've got to understand that seeking approval from people or always trying to please people keeps costing you your own peace. Setting healthy boundaries will not be easy at first, believe me; it gives you a greater sense of freedom and self-respect.
For others the biggest lesson was understanding that failure isn’t the end of the world; most grow up with the mindset that failure means they are not good enough. That is why life is unpredictable; anything can happen. Most times this set back is an opportunity to grow and become more resilient.
The habit I unlearned this year was comparing myself with others. Social media has made it so easy to measure our lives with others, and after that we may start loving ourselves less and start thinking that we are not good enough. I told myself this year that I will never compare myself with people over the years; this act has really taken away my happiness and joy, and I fail to appreciate the little milestones I achieve.
Your lesson may not be about unlearning; it may be about discovering something beautiful about your life, like saving more money, exercising regularly, and so on.
I have got to realize that the main reason why we do not notice things we unlearn is because the lessons aren’t dramatic; it occurs through everyday experience. Life has a way of teaching us. As we journey into the remaining half of the year, we should reflect, sit, and think about the person we were in the first quarter and see if there are things we need to unlearn. Have there been any habits you left behind?
