The Rising Of The Moon - An Irish Rebel Song - HIVE Open Mic 160
Greetings Folks
This week for the theme of fraternity Im bringing you a song that tells of a battle fought during the Irish rebellion of 1798.
The Irish Rebellion was a major uprising against British rule in Ireland. The main organising force was the Society of United Irishmen, a republican revolutionary group influenced by the ideas of the American and French revolutions.
The song tells of an army led by Theobald Wolfe Tone, one of the founding members of The United Irishmen as they head off the fight against the English.
I hope you guys enjoy my song this week.
The Rising Of The Moon
"Oh come tell me Sean O'Farrell, tell me why you hurry so"
"Wont you hush a while and listen," for your cheeks are all aglow
"I bear orders from the captain, to get ready quick and soon
For the pikes must be together by the rising of the moon"
"And come tell me Sean O'Farrell, where the gathering is to be"
"At the old spot by the river; quite well known to you and me"
"One more word for signal token; whistle out the marching tune
With your pike upon your shoulder at the rising of the moon"
By the rising of the moon, by the rising of the moon
With your pike upon your shoulder by the rising of the moon
Out from many a mud wall cabin; eyes were watching through the night
Many a manly heart was beating for the blessed warning light
Murmurs rang along the valleys to the banshee's lonely croon
And a thousand pikes were flashing by the rising of the moon
By the rising of the moon, by the rising of the moon
And a thousand pikes were flashing by the rising of the moon
All along that singing river that black mass of men was seen
Weapons high and shining through their own beloved green
Death to every foe and traitor! Whistle out the marching tune
With your pike upon your shoulder by the rising of the moon
'Tis the rising of the moon, 'tis the rising of the moon
Get your pike upon your shoulder tis the rising of the moon
Lyrics are traditional modified by me
