though there is only one game
and one rule for play
each chooses his or her game
and we are divided in this way:

• the game as it is
• the game invented within the game
• the game of denying the game

the chess player attempting to play chess

with one of two opponents

one is sure that chess is about building a tower with the pieces

and the second has flipped over the board to stare at the clear surface and agonize in contemplation over how to play on blankness

maturity is sincerity
the game requires sincerity
