Have you ever wondered how we feel the moment we get hurt?
Imagine... you're walking down the street. Suddenly your foot slips and you fall hard on the ground. For a few seconds it feels like time has stopped. At first you don't even understand what happened. Then a sharp pain rises in one part of your body.
In that moment, the first thought that comes to mind is, "Did I break a bone?"
We immediately try to move our hand or leg. If it moves, we get a little relief. But if there's more pain, the fear grows. We keep looking at the spot where we got hurt. If there's blood, the panic increases.
Why does this happen?
Because our brain starts asking many questions in an instant. Am I okay? Is this a serious injury? Do I need to go to the doctor?
If the injury is severe, for a few seconds the brain itself goes numb. There's a strange silence before the pain is felt. Then the pain gradually starts to grow. Sometimes it feels like someone has set a strong fire on that spot, or someone is pressing hard from inside.
If the injury is on the knee, we immediately grab it. If it's on the hand, we start rubbing it. We do this without thinking. Perhaps because our body itself tries to reduce that pain.
Then our gaze goes to that spot. If it's just a light scratch, we think, "Well, it's not too bad." But if we see blood, our heartbeat quickens a bit. Many people even get scared just by seeing blood.
A few minutes after the injury, the sensation of pain becomes clearer. What felt mild before now starts to hurt more. This is because the body now fully understands where the injury is.
If there's someone close by, we first look at them. Sometimes someone asks, "Did you get hurt badly?" And I don't know why, hearing that gives a little courage. The pain doesn't completely go away, but the mind gets comforted that someone is there.
If the injury happened in childhood, we often used to cry. Mom or Dad would just say, "Nothing happened, it will be fine." And believe me, just hearing that from them would make half the pain disappear. Perhaps trust works before medicine.
When the pain subsides a little, the mind starts thinking again, "Why does pain even happen?"
Pain isn't the enemy, but the body's greatest shield. Without it, we'd keep using a broken hand or leg, worsening the damage. Pain yells—'Wait, let me heal.' Soon, the body starts fixing: blood flows to injuries, clots form, swelling shows internal repairs. Days later, a scab falls, pain fades, life resumes—but a small scar may stay, a memento. No one likes getting hurt.
At that moment, fear and questions flood the mind. Yet every injury reveals the body's wonder. From outside, only pain; inside, tireless healing. So next time you ache, don't feel betrayed. Your body is fiercely protecting you, striving to make you whole again.
