Make & Gothic Weekend / ものづくりとゴシックの週末

From last weekend through the holiday Monday, the annual gothic festival WGT (Wave Gotik Treffen) was taking place in my city Leipzig. Amazingly, this year was the 33rd edition. Following last year, when I joined for the first time with an actual costume, I went again this year too!

Day 0 started with visiting the open studio of a head accessory artist close from my garden who is a longtime regular of the festival. I dressed in black clothes, put flowers on my head, and went to hang out there. Day 1 was picnic day. This year our family schedule did not quite match up, so I rode my bicycle wearing clothes I could also do gardening, did some work in the garden, and then headed to the picnic area nearby.

On the second day I made black Suahi plate and served it at a Japanese cultural center, and the following day I visited a medieval-style market with my child. On the final day, we went to the central station in costume to watch and unofficially send off the festival visitors one last time. And we ate frozen yogurt decorated in black.

My Maker Activities for/during WGT

This year, since I bought a 3D printer in spring, I became quite obsessed with making small accessories and decorations. First, I made a bracelet by printing flat black-and-white rose illustrations and connecting them together. That one was actually pretty easy. Nice.

I thought wrapping patterns around a ring shape and adding embossed details would also be simple, but I struggled quite a bit learning how to use Fusion 360 before finally finishing it. But the feeling of accomplishment after learning, experimenting, and finally making it work was amazing.

For smaller pieces, I made bird earrings. I printed the wings, body, and tail separately and assembled them afterward, then painted the beak and around the eyes with gold acrylic paint.

I also made this bangle, which I was still printing right before leaving for the pre-meetup. The process was basically like making a very large ring.

Not gothic-related, but since it was Bitcoin Pizza Day on 22nd, I designed a cookie cutter for cutting cheese toppings into Bitcoin shapes too.

Speaking of food and making things, during the gothic festival I also ended up preparing a black sushi plate at the Japanese cultural center, Das Japanische Haus. For that, I designed and made a sushi mold, then served black rice oshizushi (pressed ushi) together with a salad topped with black sesame dressing.

It was fun as much as last year. Now I'm thinking about buying a full pass next year and enjoy it more for my third WGT.

先週末から休日の月曜日にかけて、我が町では毎年恒例のゴシックフェスティバルWGT(Wave Gotik Treffen)が開催されていました。今年でなんと33回目。初めてコスチュームを用意して参加した去年に続いて今年も参加してきました。

0日目は庭のご近所さんでゴシックフェスティバル常連のヘッドアクセサリー作家の方のオープンスタジオに黒い衣装を来て頭に花を乗せて遊びに行ってきました。1日目はピクニックデー。今年は家族の都合がつかず、自転車に乗って庭仕事をできる衣装を来て、庭仕事をして、庭からほど近いピクニック会場へ。2日目は黒いご飯を作ってカルチャーセンターで提供して、翌日は子供と黒一色の中世な雰囲気のマーケットへ。最終日はフェスティバル参加者の見納めと勝手な見送りを兼ねて子供と衣装を来て中央駅へ。フローズンヨーグルトを黒くデコして食べて帰ってきました。

今年は春に3Dプリンタを買ったこともあり、アクセサリなどの小物づくりに凝りました。まずは白黒で描いたバラをフラットなままプリントしてつなげたブレスレットを。これは結構簡単で、しめしめ。

図柄を指輪の形に巻きつけて、凹凸を出すのも簡単かなと思いきや、Fusion 360の使い方に苦戦して、ようやく完成。でも学んで試して出来上がった達成感といったら！

小さなものでは、鳥のイヤリングも作りました。これは羽、胴、尻尾をばらばらに印刷してくっつけて、くちばしと目の周りを金色のアクリルカラーで塗ってみました。

あとはプレミートアップに出かける直前まで印刷していたバングルも。作り方は大きな指輪といった感じです。

ゴシックではないのですが、ビットコインピザデーもあり、トッピングのチーズを切るためのクッキーカッターも作りました。

食べ物＆Makeといえば、ゴシックフェスティバル会期中に、日本のカルチャーセンターことDas Japanische Hausにて、黒い押寿司のプレートを作ることになり、押寿司メーカーを作って、黒米の押し寿司に黒胡麻ドレッシングをかけたサラダを添えて提供しました。

そんなこんなで去年に続いて今年はものづくりの面でたのしいゴシックフェスティバルとなりました。コスプレって楽しいですね。来年はフルパスを買って、イベントやライブにももっと足を運びたいななんて今から思っているのでした。
