A 3D Printed Ice Maker for Hot Summer Days / 3Dプリンタで暑さ対策！？

During the heat wave at the end of last month, temperatures here in eastern Germany, where I live, stayed close to 40°C for several days. On the days I was at home, I tried to survive the heat by placing frozen bottled water in front of my small desk fan.

Then I started wondering: what if the air could pass through the ice itself? Would it feel a little cooler?

Once an idea comes to mind, I have to try it. So this week, in between working on my tax declarations, I designed a mold for making ice with holes in it and printed it with my 3D printer. Instead of one solid block of ice, it has holes like a honeycomb structure, increasing the surface area and allowing air to pass through.

When I actually placed it in front of the fan, it felt… maybe a bit cooler. Or maybe I just became attached to it because I made it myself 😅

Regardless of the result, I really enjoyed the process: noticing a problem, turning an idea into a shape, and quickly testing it. 3D printers are great. This one was just a small prototype, so maybe I’ll make a bigger version for the next heat wave.

I really hope the next heat wave doesn’t come, but if it does, I’ll try to get through it while enjoying a bit of experimentation. To everyone who went through the heat wave in Europe: that was tough. We survived.

先月末の熱波では、私が住むドイツ東部でも気温が40度近くまで上がる日が連日続きました。自宅にいる日は、凍らせたペットボトルを小さな卓上扇風機の前に置いて、暑さを凌いでいました。

そうしているうちに「氷の中を風が通り抜ければ、もう少し冷えるのかな？」と思うようになりました。思いついたら試さずにはいられません。今週確定申告の合間に、穴のあいた氷を作るための型をデザインして、3Dプリンタで造形してみました。大きな氷の塊ではなく、ハニカム構造のように穴があいていて、表面積が増えて、風が通ります。

実際に扇風機の前に立てて使ってみると、なーーーんとなく涼しい気がします。いや、自分で作って愛着がわいているだけかもしれません 😅

結果はさておき、暑さをきっかけに、アイディアを形にして、さくっと試してみる過程が楽しかったです。3Dプリンタ、いいですね。今回のはプロトタイプの小さなものだったので、次の熱波の時にはもう少し大きいものを作ってみようかな。

次の熱波は来ないでほしいですが、もし来てしまったら、実験を楽しみつつ乗り切ろうと思います。ヨーロッパで熱波に当たったみなさん、大変でしたよね、お疲れさまでした。
