Displayable Wood Sample Collection / 飾れる木材見本帳

I’m spending this summer at an artist residency in Seiffen, a toy-making village in Germany.

The workshop is full of beautiful wood offcuts. As part of learning more about different wood species, I decided to identify them together with Claude (AI) and make a wood sample collection. The identification process itself turned out to be fascinating, teaching me not only how to tell different woods apart, but also about the history of the region's forests and wood craft.

Once I had identified the wood species, I started cutting them into smaller pieces. Since every offcut already had its own unique shape, I wanted to preserve that character.

I actually already have a beautiful commercial wood sample collection at home. The problem is that it lives in a box, so I only take it out when I need it. It's pity… especially considering how expensive it was 😄

So I decided to make a wood sample collection that could be hung up and enjoyed every day. It's very simple. I lightly sanded the edges while keeping the original shape of each offcut, drilled a hole with the drill press, and threaded them onto a cord.

And so, the very first piece I made during this residency turned out to be a displayable wood sample collection 🪵

この夏はドイツのおもちゃの村ザイフェンでレジデンシーに参加しています。

工房には、たくさんきれいな木の端材が転がっています。私の木材の勉強も兼ねて、Claudeとどれがどの木材か特定して、見本帳を作ることにしました。木材を特定するプロセスは、木材の見分け方や、地域の森林資源の変遷を学ぶ楽しいものになりました。

木材を特定し終えて小さなピースに切るときに、いろいろな形をしていることを活かしたいなと思いました。実は自宅にも美しい木の見本帳があるのですが、箱に入れて収納することを前提としていて、木材を検討するときにしか出さなくて、もったいないと思っていたのです。高かったし！

ということで、吊るして飾って、眺めることもできる木の見本帳を作ることにしました。作り方はとてもシンプルで、端材それぞれの形を残しつつ、角を軽く面取りし、ボール盤で穴を開けてコードを通しました。

ということで、滞在中の作品第一号は、飾れる木の見本帳になったのでした 😊
