Growing Calendula for a Maker's Salve / メイカー軟膏のためのカレンデュラ栽培中

When you spend a lot of time making things or cooking, your hands inevitably become rough. Whether it's carving wood, working with soil, kneading bread, or washing dishes, our hands go through a lot. In winter especially, my fingertips sometimes become dry and cracked 🥺

This year I'm planning to make a calendula salve and growing calendula in the garden.

During the stay-at-home period of the COVID pandemic, I joined an online workshop hosted by a gardener in New Zealand, where I learned how to make calendula salve. When I looked back the photos, it was 2021.

As a prep, I took petals from dried calendula flowers sold as tea with my daughter.

Then in the first session, we learned about calendula and infused the petals in oil.

A month later, during the second session, we turned that infused oil into a salve.

About five years have passed since then, and recently I started looking for the organic dried calendula flower tea that I had used back then. But I couldn't find it anywhere. I checked organic shops in my town, and looked in an organic tea and spice store while traveling in the Czech Republic.

Then I thought why not grow it myself? The gardener who hosted the workshop used calendula she had grown in her own garden. So I sowed some seeds!

I've been transplanting the seedlings as they grow. Now that most of my spring and summer seed-starting and planting work is done, I'm wondering whether to raise a few more seedlings or simply sow some seeds directly into the garden.

I hope to pick the flowers in summer, dry them, and infuse them in oil. With a little luck, by autumn I'll have a salve to protect my hands.

Until then, I'm looking forward to seeing the first calendula flowers bloom in the garden this year.

ものづくりや料理をしていると、どうしても手が荒れてしまいます。

木を削ったり、土を触ったり、パンをこねたり、食器を洗ったり。特に冬になると、指先がひび割れて痛くなることも。私は手が体のパーツの中でも特に好きで、荒れてしまった見た目も地味につらいです。そんなときのために、今年はカレンデュラの軟膏を作ろうと思っています。

以前、コロナ禍のステイホーム期間中に、ニュージーランドのガーデナーさんのオンラインワークショップに参加して、カレンデュラの軟膏作りを教わったことがありました。写真を見返してみると2021年のことでした。

私はドイツの自宅から参加し、地球の反対側にあるニュージーランドの庭の話を聞きながら、初回はドライのカレンデュラをオイルに漬けて、一ヶ月後の二回目に軟膏を作りました。当時はまだ子供が赤ちゃんと子供の間のような感じで、ムチムチした足の裏がかわいい 😄

それから5年ほどたって、当時使ったオーガニックのお茶用のドライカレンデュラを探したのですが、ない！今住んでいる町のオーガニックショップを見て歩いて、さらに旅先のチェコのオーガニックショップや、オーストリアのお茶専門店Sonnentorの直営店を覗いてもありませんでした。

それなら自分で育てよう。ワークショップのホストのガーデナーさんは自分で育てたカレンデュラを使っていました。

ということで早速種まきをして、都度都度移植して行って、初回に移植したものはずいぶん大きくなってきました。春夏の育苗と植え付けが落ち着いたので、もう少し苗を育て足そうか、それとも種を直播きしようか考えているところです。

夏に花を摘んで、乾燥させて、オイルに漬けて、秋には手を守る軟膏ができあがるといいな。

そんなことを考えながら、今年最初のカレンデュラの花が咲くのを楽しみに待っています。
