Construction 🚧 Diary 007: Bamboo – its Uses and Advantages in Construction Works

Hi everyone, welcome back once again.
In today’s writing, I will be discussing the use of bamboo on construction sites.

Nigeria is one of the developing countries in Africa where bamboo is still widely used in building construction. Their major uses are as follows:

  1. Scaffolds: They are used to create a temporary platform where workers could stand on to work in construction, especially during bricklaying and plastering.
  2. Shoring: They are used as vertical props to support slab formwork or beams until the concrete is fully set.
  3. It is also used in building site office or storage shed.

These bamboo sticks are erected by skilled carpenters, ensuring that:
*Selection of strong and matured bamboo, at least 3 years old.

  • Ensuring accuracy in positioning the bamboo vertically so as to carry concrete load effectively and avoid slanting support.
  • Enduring closer spacing of bamboo, this will help increase its strength to carry heavier loads.
  • A solid base support is provided (using wood) under each bamboo, this helps to prevent sinking into the ground due to imposed load.
  • Ensuring top-level by placing a wooden plate between bamboo and formwork (to spread the load evenly)
