Hive Music Festival - Week N° 180 - Round 3 ''LA MUNDANZA - OKills'' by YUSAYMON
The Mudanza: A Journey with Cuatro and Harmonies
This week I'm bringing you "la mudanza" (the move). And no, it's not about moving boxes from one place to another—it's about an emotional and musical move, one that's deeply Venezuelan. I've been listening to that song by Okills, the one called "La Mudanza," and as often happens when a song grabs hold of me, I couldn't help but pick up my cuatro and make it my own.
The original version has that rock energy, powerful and full of presence. But I wanted to feel it differently, more intimate, more like home. So I sat down, figured out the chords on the cuatro, and took it apart piece by piece. It's amazing how this humble little instrument can completely transform a song. Suddenly, the urgency in the lyrics turned into a gentle sway, a confession.
But I didn't stop there. After laying down the cuatro track, I felt the urge to do more. I started playing with backing vocals—those harmonies that add texture and depth. I recorded one track, then another, searching for that counterpoint that nostalgia often has: one voice telling the story while another comments softly underneath, like an echo. It was meticulous work, putting care into every detail.
When I finally finished it, it sounded different. It sounded like a conversation among friends, like an afternoon in the sun on the patio. It reminded me why I love doing this: taking songs that move me and filtering them through my own roots and perspective. In the end, "la mudanza" became a journey. From the original song to my cuatro, from my cuatro to the vocal harmonies, and from there to you—the ones who give meaning to sharing it.
I'll leave the link to the original song so you can listen and compare. My little version came from the heart, with all the respect and admiration for the guys in Okills. I hope you enjoy this little piece of my world. See you around!
