Jerusalem: Turkey warns the US

Turkey warned today against Washington's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Changing the "historic" status of Jerusalem would lead to "a great catastrophe" and "put an end to the peace process," Turkish government spokesman Bekir Bozdag told a news conference.
Such a decision by the US administration "would pave the way for new clashes, new disputes, more instability in the region, unpredictable events," he said.

"This measure would have no advantage for Israel, no benefit for other countries or for the region." Taking this step that is not advantageous would serve no purpose other than risk driving the region on the road to a new disaster, "stressed Bozdag.

At a Washington-based forum, Jared Kushner, son-in-law and close adviser to the US president, announced yesterday that Donald Trump was finalizing his decision on a possible relocation of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Theoretically, according to the US State Department, Mr. Trump must decide today if he renews (as did every six months of his predecessors and himself in June) a clause derogating from the law that imposes, since 1995, to install the embassy in Jerusalem. Or if he gives the green light to this move, as he promised during his campaign.
The international community has never recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel or the annexation of its occupied eastern part in 1967.
In a telephone conversation Sunday with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insisted on the need for the creation of an independent Palestinian state "with East Jerusalem as its capital".
