Hello, friends! I’ve really missed my regular Friday posts in this mushroom community. But what can you do when you’re unfairly pushed off the platform? Anyway, enough complaining—I’d like to share some photos of mushrooms I recently found growing on old wooden stakes that we used as supports for tomatoes. My favorite tool, Google Lens, helped me identify them as Crucibulum laeve. These mushrooms have a unique structure that helps them disperse spores using raindrops: 1. “Nest” (peridium): Small cup-shaped structures, 4–10 mm in diameter. At first, they are cushion-shaped and covered with a bright yellow or mustard-colored membrane (epiphragm). Over time, it ruptures, revealing the inner surface—smooth, shiny, and whitish-gray. 2. “Eggs” (peridioles): Inside are lens-shaped structures about 2 mm in diameter that contain the spores. In this species, they are usually pale beige or whitish. Dispersal mechanism: The peridioles are attached to the walls of the “nest” by a thin elastic cord (funiculus). When a raindrop hits the cup, it ejects the “egg” outward. The cord uncoils and can latch onto nearby twigs or plants, securing the spores onto a new surface. Most often, Crucibulum laeve grows in large groups on woody debris: decaying branches, needles, sawdust, bark, and sometimes even on old manure or garden mulch. They can be found from spring to late autumn, mainly in temperate forests of North America and Eurasia, including Ukraine.
