Esta valoración personal se sustenta, por suerte, en la validez de una investigación histórica realizada por una coterránea cuyo sentido existencial ha estado enfocado en despojar de absurdas tergiversaciones lo verdaderamente ocurrido aquel glorioso 24 de febrero en el poblado de Baire.

Su contenido permeado, hasta los tuétanos, de un enfoque localista, no peca de chovinismo, simple y modestamente intenta enarbolar el halo de la aureola ganada por un extraordinario mérito, no compartido en la historia, que hoy se intenta desconocer.

Con la entrada de las fuerzas insurrectas a Baire (centro Oriente de Cuba), aquel 24 de febrero de 1895, las autoridades coloniales: guardias civiles y alcaldía, se escurrían precipitadamente, tal vez ante la inesperada realidad de tener ante sus ojos una inminente — y colosal — insurrección en manifiesta disposición de guerra avanzando por las calles del poblado hacia el objetivo previsto: ocupar el sitio, pronunciarse en la otrora "Plaza de los Rojos Flamboyanes" y luego responder militarmente al enemigo, si era necesario... Pero no hubo resistencia. Por lo que se supone que una parte importante de la Jurisdicción de Jiguaní (a la cual pertenecía Baire), estaba bajo el control de las fuerzas revolucionarias.

Tres días después, las tropas fueron confiadas, para su conducción, al entonces Coronel de la Gesta Independentista del 68: Jesús Rabí Sablón, oficial de altísima estatura política, militar y moral. Estableciendo su campamento guerrillero en las cercanías del poblado, en un lugar conocido como "Las Yeguas".

Aunque no existe aquí pretensión alguna de establecer comparaciones con otros alzamientos que se produjeron ese día, sí es necesario — para comprender mejor la extraordinaria trascendencia del hecho nuestro — destacar que, como consecuencia de la eficacia alcanzada en la concreción del mismo, en fechas posteriores acontecieron importantes acciones militares que, distante de cualquier intención de exaltación ruidosa, son dignas de exponerlas como testimonio de una realidad poco divulgada en los anales de la historia patria "local". Ello da fe de un estadío de franca consolidación de las fuerzas insurrectas, protagonistas del grito de independencia de referencia, que les permitió luego una prolongada y fructífera existencia como "guerrilla en pie de lucha".

Esta meritoria e insuperable condición, su justa valoración por importantes patriotas de esa epopeya en celebraciones que enraizaron la tradición popular, y la oportuna y sagaz percepción de dos genialidades políticas: José Martí y Fidel Castro, convirtieron al "GRITO DE BAIRE" en una sentencia irrevocable.

El 24 de febrero hubo 36 alzamientos simultáneos, respondiendo a la orden dada por José Martí para el reinicio de la Guerra de Independencia. Pero el acontecido en el poblado de Baire pasó a la historia como la muestra del espíritu rebelde, combativo y valeroso de todos los cubanos.

BAIRE contribuyó, con creces, a prender la llama bélica para que la "GUERRA NECESARIA" tuviera — como nuestro apóstol José Martí aspiraba y solía decir — "LA BREVEDAD Y LA EFICACIA DEL RAYO".

Its content, permeated to its very core by a local perspective, is not chauvinistic; it simply and modestly attempts to celebrate the halo earned through a colossal merit, one not shared by history, which is now being ignored.

With the entry of the insurgent forces into Baire (central-eastern Cuba) on February 24, 1895, the colonial authorities—civil guards and the mayor—fled hastily, perhaps faced with the unexpected reality of an imminent—and colossal—insurrection, clearly ready for war, advancing through the town's streets toward its intended objective: to occupy the site, declare itself in the former "Plaza de los Rojos Flamboyanes" (Plaza of the Red Flamboyan Trees), and then respond militarily to the enemy, if necessary. But there was no resistance. Therefore, it is assumed that a significant part of the Jiguaní Jurisdiction (to which Baire belonged) was under the control of the revolutionary forces.

Three days later, the troops were entrusted to the command of Colonel Jesús Rabí Sablón, then a veteran of the 1868 War of Independence, an officer of immense political, military, and moral stature. He established his guerrilla camp near the town, in a place known as "Las Yeguas" (The Mares).

While there is no intention here to draw comparisons with other uprisings that occurred that day, it is necessary—to better understand the extraordinary significance of our event—to highlight that, as a consequence of its effectiveness, important military actions took place in the following days. Far from any intention of ostentatious praise, these actions are worthy of being presented as evidence of a reality little known in the annals of local national history. This testifies to a stage of clear consolidation of the insurgent forces, the protagonists of the aforementioned cry for independence, which later allowed them a prolonged and fruitful existence as a "guerrilla force in constant struggle."

This meritorious and unsurpassed status, its just recognition by important patriots of that epic in celebrations that became deeply rooted in popular tradition, and the timely and astute perception of two political geniuses: José Martí and Fidel Castro, transformed the "Cry of Baire" into an irrevocable declaration.

On February 24, there were 36 simultaneous uprisings, responding to the order given by José Martí to restart the War of Independence. But the one that took place in the town of Baire went down in history as the demonstration of the rebellious, combative, and courageous spirit of all Cubans.

BAIRE contributed significantly to igniting the flame of war so that the "NECESSARY WAR" would have—as our apostle José Martí aspired and often said—"THE BREVITY AND EFFICACY OF LIGHTNING."
