Diseñando el atuendo de Simón Bolívar para la feria del libro/Designing Simón Bolívar's costume for the book fair

Hola, amigos, deseo que estén muy bien. Hoy quiero compartirles lo que ha sido este proceso de cumplir con la tarea de mi pequeño Diego y su dramatización como Simón Bolívar. Esto formará parte de la feria del libro y el viaje en el tiempo para recordar la vida y obra de nuestro Libertador. Sin duda, ha sido todo un reto personal, ya que me tocó realizar manualidades que jamás había intentado antes; sin embargo, tenía tantas ganas de lograrlo que quedé sumamente satisfecha con lo que obtuve.

Lo primero que comparto fue la confección de la parte superior. Por suerte, conseguí una camisa prestada que ya tenía el cuello decorado con detalles dorados, así que solo me tocó completar algunas áreas específicas, como las mangas y las hombreras. Pero para que su traje estuviera verdaderamente completo, necesitaba llevar esa icónica pechera roja que siempre he visto en las imágenes históricas de Simón Bolívar. Para ello, aproveché una cartulina de un tono rojo muy llamativo, la cual preferí usar porque los pliegos de foami que conseguí en ese color no tenían una intensidad que me convenciera.

Por otro lado, compré foami amarillo que me encantó por su brillo, y con él elaboré las hojitas de laurel que adornan el traje. Para que el diseño fuera uniforme, primero saqué la forma en una plantilla de cartulina y luego las traspasé al material definitivo, logrando que todas quedaran idénticas. Fui uniendo cada pieza con silicón caliente y el acabado me encantó; luego, le coloqué cierre mágico para que pudiera ajustarse y sujetarse de forma práctica, funcionando como una especie de chaleco.

Hello, friends, I hope you’re all doing well. Today I want to share with you what this process has been like—helping my little Diego with his school project and his role-play as Simón Bolívar. This will be part of the book fair and the “journey through time” to commemorate the life and work of our Liberator. It has certainly been a personal challenge, since I had to do crafts I had never tried before; however, I was so eager to pull it off that I was extremely satisfied with the result.
The first thing I’ll share is how I made the top. Luckily, I borrowed a shirt that already had a collar decorated with gold details, so I just had to finish up a few specific areas, like the sleeves and shoulder pads. But for his costume to be truly complete, he needed to wear that iconic red breastplate that I’ve always seen in historical images of Simón Bolívar. For this, I used a piece of cardstock in a very striking shade of red, which I preferred because the foam sheets I found in that color didn’t have the intensity I was looking for.
On the other hand, I bought yellow foam that I loved for its shine, and I used it to make the laurel leaves that adorn the costume. To ensure the design was uniform, I first traced the shape onto a cardboard template and then transferred it to the final material, making sure they all turned out identical. I attached each piece with hot glue, and I loved the finish; then, I added a Velcro closure so it could be adjusted and fastened practically, functioning as a sort of vest.

Después de eso, me dediqué a la creación de las botas y les confieso que eso fue lo que más trabajo me costó. Para elaborarlas utilicé foami de color negro, silicón caliente y un pequeño fragmento de foami dorado para añadir unos detalles mínimos. He visto algunos disfraces donde les colocan demasiado brillo dorado en el calzado, pero no me parece que refleje cómo eran realmente las botas de Simón Bolívar jejejje. Para armar esta parte usé tres pliegos grandes de material: dos de ellos para darle la altura necesaria a las piernas y el tercero para cubrir la zona frontal de los pies.

Fue una situación muy cómica porque, después de que las pegué y creí que estaban totalmente listas, cuando mi hijo se las probó simplemente no le entraban. Me tocó desarmarlas por completo y comenzar la estructura desde cero. Sufrí varias quemadas en los dedos porque, como les comenté, no tengo experiencia haciendo manualidades, pero mi meta era cumplir con ese encargo escolar y hacer que mi estrellita resplandeciente brillara en el escenario. Así que para resolver el cierre, se me ocurrió colocarle unas tiras del mismo material con cierre mágico para que le quedaran ajustadas, y visualmente esas bandas se le veían muy bien.

Para finalizar la costura, le añadí un pequeño detalle dorado en la parte superior y en el centro de la bota, simulando una especie de hebilla decorativa. Además, doblé los bordes de arriba para que tuvieran un aspecto mucho más realista y parecido al cuero. Me gustó muchísimo cómo lucían al final, aunque por precaución decidí llevarme la pistola de silicón al evento por si acaso jajajaj. Completé todo su atuendo con un pantalón beige que él ya tenía guardado en su clóset, y la combinación cromática quedó perfecta.

After that, I focused on making the boots, and I have to admit that was the hardest part. To make them, I used black foam, hot glue, and a small piece of gold foam to add some subtle details. I’ve seen some costumes where they put too much gold glitter on the shoes, but I don’t think that reflects what Simón Bolívar’s boots actually looked like, hehehe. To put this part together, I used three large sheets of material: two of them to give the legs the necessary height and the third to cover the front of the feet.

It was a really funny situation because, after I glued them together and thought they were totally done, when my son tried them on, they just wouldn’t fit. I had to take them apart completely and start the structure from scratch. I got several burns on my fingers because, as I mentioned, I have no experience with crafts, but my goal was to complete that school project and make my little star shine brightly on stage. So, to solve the closure issue, I came up with the idea of attaching some strips of the same material with Velcro so they’d fit snugly, and visually, those bands looked great on him.

To finish the sewing, I added a small gold detail at the top and in the center of the boot, simulating a sort of decorative buckle. I also folded the top edges so they would look much more realistic and leather-like. I really loved how they looked in the end, although just to be safe, I decided to bring the hot glue gun to the event just in case, hahaha. I completed his entire outfit with a pair of beige pants he already had in his closet, and the color combination turned out perfect.

También, con la idea de darle un toque mucho más similar al personaje real, le he dejado crecer el cabello durante este último mes; de este modo, pudimos peinarlo hacia atrás para que se le viera con bastante volumen. Asimismo, le pinté las patillas usando un lápiz de cejas de color negro. El resultado de todo su atuendo fue espectacular, incluso siento que quedó mejor que los disfraces que había visto disponibles para alquilar en las tiendas. Lo hice con mis propias manos y quedó muy bien; me siento feliz con el esfuerzo y, aunque dio bastante trabajo, sobre todo el calzado, valió totalmente la pena.

Also, to make him look even more like the real character, I let his hair grow out over the past month; that way, we could comb it back to give it plenty of volume. I also drew his sideburns using a black eyebrow pencil. The result of his entire outfit was spectacular; I even feel like it turned out better than the costumes I’d seen available for rent in stores. I made it with my own hands and it turned out great; I’m happy with the effort, and even though it was quite a lot of work—especially the shoes—it was totally worth it.
