Today I found myself thinking about one of the greatest “miracles” that exist. It’s something that happens all the time, everywhere.

I’m talking about life. Not life as we live it—like the life we’re living right now—but rather the origin of life.

Think about this: have you ever considered that a cell, formed by the fusion of two cells—which originated from two different organisms and joined together to form a single cell—from that moment on has the ability to divide and generate millions and millions of cells, each with a specific function, all working together with every other cell?

An organism that didn’t “ask” to be born or to exist, but which has the capacity, as it develops, to influence the lives of many people—or just its own—or perhaps no one at all. Yet it may have the great opportunity to make a positive difference for the other organisms around it.

This living being—and I’m referring specifically to human beings—is a true miracle. Along with all forms of life, even the most basic ones. If we stop to think about it for a moment, we realize just how magnificent this true miracle is.

A completely new being, born from the fusion of two cells from two beings...

Everything that can happen in the midst of the process—and the way it is controlled and develops—is simply fantastic.

I think that if we all thought of others as true miracles, as unique, one-of-a-kind beings...

Many of the decisions that politicians make today view citizens of other countries, regions, races, or faiths merely as numbers.

We all count.

It’s true that not all of us will ever be an astronaut, a judge, a teacher, or even a taxi driver… But that is the true magic—the true value—of human creation and of life in general.

All the cells of all organisms are similar to one another in some way. They all had a common ancestral cell, but conditions and chance make us absolutely unique beings.

Let’s think more about the gift of life, about the true miracle of the birth of a new being...
