The boat
The excellent film 'Das Boot', especially the iconic scene in which the U-boat sinks to below it's supported depth and then resurfaces and the diesel engine roars to life is the best possible illustration that the eternal Kraut became a maritime threat only on account of his mastery of steel and manufacture.
