Why Neck Pain is becoming Common?

Look around you right now. Bus, classroom, cafe, hostel, office. 8 out of 10 people have their head bent forward, eyes locked on a glowing screen. We call it scrolling, working, studying. Our necks call it something else: “heavy lifting.”This is not about fear. This is about awareness. Because neck pain from poor posture, mobile overuse, and computer work has become the most common “new-age” pain. Doctors call it “tech neck” or “text neck.” I call it “the pain we invited ourselves.“

Trust me in my daily cinical routine....90% of patients come wth neck pain. And surprisingly age group starts from childhood...Oh Goodness save us all...!

The good news? It’s preventable. It’s reversible. And it starts with understanding, not panic. So let’s talk , simply, honestly, creatively .. about what’s happening to our necks, why it matters, and what anyone can do about it.

→Your head weighs about 4.5 to 5.5 kg. That’s like carrying a big watermelon or a newborn baby on your shoulders all day. When you stand straight, ears over shoulders, that weight is balanced. Muscles, bones, and ligaments share the load. Easy. But tilt your head forward 15° to check a WhatsApp message? Now your neck muscles feel ∼12 kg. Tilt 30°? ∼18 kg. Tilt 60°, the way most of us scroll in bed? ∼27 kg.

Imagine holding a 5-year-old kid with your arms stretched forward for 2 hours. Your arms would shake, burn, and beg for rest. That’s exactly what your neck muscles do when you “quickly check Instagram” for 2 hours. This extra load is called “lever force.” Physics doesn’t care if you’re young, strong, or “used to it.” It just adds weight.

→Good posture is not about looking like a soldier. It’s about alignment. Ear over shoulder, shoulder over hip, hip over ankle. A straight line.Poor posture breaks that line. Chin juts forward. Upper back rounds like a “C.” Shoulders roll inward. We call this “forward head posture” or “computer hunch.”

Why do we do it? 3 reasons:
1→ Screens are below eye level. We bend to meet them.
2→ Chairs/tables are wrong height. We adapt to furniture instead of furniture adapting to us.
3→ Habit. The more we slouch, the more “normal” slouch feels. Brain thinks curved = comfortable.

Over months, muscles shorten on front of neck/chest and lengthen/weaken on back of neck/upper back. Muscles are like rubber bands. If you stretch one side for too long, it stops bouncing back. That imbalance = pain.

→Phones are amazing. They fit in pockets and carry the world. But they also train us to look down.

Worst positions for neck:

  • Lying on side, phone above face: Neck bends sideways for 30-60 min. One-sided strain.
  • Lying on stomach, chin on bed: Neck twists + extends backward. Nerves get pinched.
  • Sitting, phone at lap level: Head drops 60° for reels, gaming, reading.

→Laptops and desktops aren’t evil. But 90% of setups are wrong.

Common mistakes:

  1. Laptop on desk = screen 20-30cm below eye level. So head drops all day.
  2. Keyboard + trackpad attached = either screen too low OR arms stretched too far. Both hurt neck/shoulders.
  3. Chair with no lumbar support = lower back collapses → upper back rounds → neck has to push head forward to balance. Domino effect.
  4. No breaks = muscles stay contracted for hours. Contracted muscle = no blood flow = pain + stiffness.

Result: By 5 PM, neck feels “rusted.” Headaches start from base of skull. Shoulders feel like they’re carrying bricks.
Let’s keep it simple. No medical terms, just visuals.

Muscles: Front neck muscles get tight/short. Back neck muscles get weak/long. Like one side of a tug-of-war team has all strong players, other side has kids. Neck gets pulled forward.

Joints: Neck has 7 small bones = cervical spine. Each has discs like jelly donuts between them. Poor posture squeezes front of disc, stretches back. Over years, disc can bulge or wear out. That’s “cervical spondylosis.” Not old-age only anymore.

Nerves: Neck nerves go to arms, hands, head. If joint/disc presses nerve → tingling in fingers, numbness, shooting pain, or headaches. That’s why “neck pain” sometimes feels like “head pain.”

Breathing: Slouched posture compresses chest. You take shallow breaths. Less oxygen → more fatigue → more slouching. Pain loop.

But wait....

Your neck is polite. It whispers before it shouts. Learn the whispers:

Early whispers — Stage 1:

  1. Morning stiffness. Neck feels “locked” for first 5-10 min after waking.
  2. Need to “crack” neck/shoulders often to feel relief.
  3. Pain at base of skull after long phone/laptop use.
  4. Shoulders feel tired even without lifting anything.

Middle warnings — Stage 2:

  1. Headaches that start from neck and move to forehead/eyes. “Tension headaches.”
  2. Pain radiates to shoulder blade or upper arm.
  3. Feeling like you “can’t hold head up” after 2-3 hours of work.
  4. Numbness/tingling in fingers, especially ring + little finger.

Red flags — Stage 3, see a doctor:

  1. Sudden loss of neck movement after waking up.
  2. Pain + weakness in arm/hand. Dropping things.
  3. Numbness that doesn’t go away.
  4. Pain at night that wakes you up.

Important note: I’m sharing info, not diagnosis. If pain is severe, sudden, or has numbness/weakness, check with a doctor or physiotherapist. Early help = faster recovery.

NOW LETS TALK ABOUT SOLUTION

No gym, no expensive gadgets needed. Just habits. Pick 3 to start.

A. Setup Fixes — Change your environment
1→ The 1/3rd of your screen should hit your eye level.
2→Your spine should be supported
3→Your screen should be at least 60-70cm away from your eyes.
4→Not too bright light to squint eyes nor too dimm light to glare at screen.

B. Movement Fixes — Motion is lotion
1→ Change your movement after every 20min. Give rest to your eyes.
2→Take breaks, after 40-45 mins try to walk some steps pr any other little activities.
3→Practice Chin Tucks Excercises
4→Do slef Stretching of neck muscles on regular basis.

C. Habit Fixes — Change daily patterns
1→ Use appropriate pillow according to your neck size
2→Try to shorten the duration of screen time before sleeping.
3→Do not use earphones for too long or too loud.
4→Sleeping pillow should be comfortable.

Tech isn’t the villain. Habits are.We blame phones, laptops, “modern life.” But tech is just a tool. Hammer can build house or break window. Same with screens. The problem is “unconscious use.” We sit without noticing. We scroll without breaks. We accept pain as “normal for students/workers.” Awareness is the first fix. Next time you catch yourself with head forward, smile and correct it. That’s a rep for your neck gym.

Hunched posture = closed body language. Research shows it even affects mood and confidence. Straight posture = open chest = deeper breathing = calmer mind.
So fixing neck posture is also fixing mental posture. Body and mind are teammates. We treat pain like an enemy. Pop a pill, ignore it, hope it goes away. But pain is a messenger.

Neck stiffness = “Hey, change position.”
Headache after laptop = “Hey, take a break.”
Tingling in fingers = “Hey, nerve is pressed.”

If we listen early, small changes work. If we ignore, body has to shout louder with bigger problems. Think of pain like phone battery warning. At 20% you charge. You don’t wait till 0% and phone dies. Treat neck same way.

Our parents didn’t grow up with 8 hours/day of screens. We’re the first “screen-native” generation. Science is still learning long-term effects. But one thing is clear: human body evolved for movement, varied positions, looking at distant horizons. Not 10 hours of 30cm screen.

NOW LETS TALK ABOUT ROUTINE MODIFICATIONS
Morning 2 min:

  1. Wall check 30 sec
  2. Chin tucks 10 reps
  3. Neck side stretch 20 sec each side

Every work/study hour 1 min:

  1. Stand up
  2. Reach arms to ceiling 3x
  3. Look out window 20 sec
  4. Shoulder rolls 5x backward

Night 2 min:

  1. Doorway chest stretch 20 sec
  2. Upper trap stretch 20 sec each side
  3. Lie flat, no pillow for 1 min to decompress neck

Total = 5 min/day. Less time than 2 reels. Impact = years of healthy neck.

Your neck holds your head. Your head holds your thoughts, dreams, memory, face. It’s worth caring for.We can’t go back to a world without screens. And we shouldn’t want to. Screens connect, teach, create, heal. But we CAN go forward into a world where we use screens without becoming screen-shaped. Where we bend for goals, not for gadgets. Where we listen to whispers so we never hear screams.

So next time you scroll, remember:

  1. Raise the screen.
  2. Straighten the back.
  3. Take the break.

Small acts. Big difference.

Share this with your friends who live on their phones/laptops. Because “tech neck” is a group problem, and “neck care” should be a group habit.

Your future self will thank you. And your neck will too.
