Liquid rock, think about that for a minute, rock so hot that it is in liquid form (1300 to 2000 degrees F). A 9 mile bike ride down a gravel road followed by a 4 mile hike over various obstacles, all of which were once liquid lava. The lava fields in Kalapana are a barren waste land, all living things were erased by the slow roll of pahoehoe (pronounced 'paw-hoey-hoey'), resetting the land to zero. This type of lava flow is slow, elastic, quite safe to view from a close distance, and absolutely incredible to watch. The power and energy felt at the Pu'u O'o eruption will move you.
