The phrase “red night sky, shepherd’s joy. Red morning sky, shepherd’s warning” appears for the first time in the Gospel of Matthew. This is an old saying about wind, often used to indicate a change in the sky at dawn, and was first known to help shepherds prepare for tomorrow's weather.

Red skies form when high pressure traps dust and small particles in the atmosphere. The next day is usually dry and pleasant, because it emits a blue light that only looks red to make the sky stand out, and the red sky at sunset means strong atmospheric pressure from the west. "Dawn Shepherd's Watch" means that the red sky has already moved east under the influence of high pressure and good weather has passed there.
