What is BIP 110? Controversy around Bitcoin's OP_RETURN data usage continues.

Fix the money, fix the world.

Was denkt ihr?

You may have already heard about the OP_RETURN controversy. The Bitcoin protocol initially, and rather unintentionally, allowed up to 83 bytes of arbitrary data to be appended to a transaction after the OP_RETURN code. This limit was recently removed with the controversial Bitcoin Core v30 update. Prior to that, Taproot had already made it possible to store larger amounts of data on the Bitcoin blockchain, which was used, for example, for NFTs.

Then came the Bitcoin Core v30 update, which even removed the OP_RETURN data limit. Now, Bitcoin blocks are limited only by the maximum SegWit block size of 4 megabytes and transaction fees.

BIP 110 aims to reverse the removal of the data limit and also restrict Taproot scripts so that an arbitrary amount of data can no longer be stored on the Bitcoin blockchain. For compatibility reasons, BIP 110 would reintroduce the original limit of 83 bytes. Certain smaller data use cases and tokens on Bitcoin would thus remain possible.

From a technical standpoint, BIP 110 would make sense from today’s perspective, as blockchain space is extremely limited and expensive. Excessive growth of the blockchain would, in the long term, make operating the blockchain extremely complicated, and significant efforts toward scaling (sharding) would be necessary, which poses a major technical challenge.

On the other hand, transaction fees on Bitcoin are currently very low. New use cases would be a welcome source of revenue for miners and could, in the long term, help offset declining miner revenues and resolve the Coinbase/fee dilemma. With Bitcoin’s mining rewards on the decline, miners are increasingly reliant on transaction fees.

BIP 110 is supported by some Bitcoin maximalists, Bitcoin Knots, and Bitcoin OGs, while the majority of the industry tends to back Bitcoin Core v30. It is therefore questionable whether BIP 110 will receive the necessary support.

In addition to the technical argument, BIP 110 proponents emphasize that Bitcoin should focus on the monetary aspect. They argue that Bitcoin’s core mission—to revolutionize the monetary system—requires full attention and all available resources.

Fix the money, fix the world.

What do you think? Are your supporting BIP 110? Should Bitcoin focus on its core feature or expand to other use cases?
