The TSMC microchip supply chain is crazier than you think.

Die TSMC-Microchip-Supply-Chain ist noch verrückter als ihr denkt, eine einzelne Firma in Taiwan, die Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), hat praktisch ein 90%-Monopol auf die am höchsten entwickelte Microchip-Produktion auf der Welt mit der kleinsten Fertigungstechnik.

TSMC benötigt wiederum Spezial-Lithografie-Maschinen einer niederländischen Firma. ASML.

ASML ist auf Spiegel des deutschen Unternehmens Carl Zeiss angewiesen, die einzige Firma, die in der Lage ist, die optischen Bestandteile für ASML herzustellen.

Die Lichtquelle für die EUV-Lithografie-Maschinen von ASML wird wiederum von einer einzigen Firma in San Diego hergestellt.

Die Fotolacke, die zum Drucken von Transistormustern verwendet werden, werden von japanischen Firmen wie JSR und Tokyo Ohka Kogyo produziert.

Das Quarz für die Siliziumwafer stammt wiederum aus einer einzigen Mine in North Carolina.

Die Seltenen Erden und das Kupfer kommt aus Chile, Kongo, aber auch aus China.

Die für die Chipherstellung benötigten Spezialgase wie Neon und Fluor stammen größtenteils aus der Ukraine und Japan.

Und last but not least, die Konstruktionspläne für die Chips kommen wiederum von amerikanischen Unternehmen wie NVIDIA, AMD, Apple etc., die mit Software von US-Firmen wie Synopsys und Cadence entwickelt werden.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Supply Chains sind nicht nur globaler, sondern viel komplexer als man denkt. TSMC ist in dieser Hinsicht sicher nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Bedenkliche Monopole oder Oligopole gibt es sicher auch in anderen Branchen, von denen wir weniger wissen.

The TSMC microchip supply chain is crazier than you think. A single company in Taiwan, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), has a virtual 90% monopoly on the most advanced microchip production on earth using the smallest manufacturing technology.

TSMC, in turn, requires special lithography machines from a Dutch company, ASML.

ASML relies on mirrors from the German company Carl Zeiss, the only company capable of manufacturing the optical components for ASML.

The light source for ASML's EUV lithography machines is, in turn, manufactured by a single company in San Diego.

The photoresists used to print transistor patterns are produced by Japanese companies such as JSR and Tokyo Ohka Kogyo.

The quartz for the silicon wafers comes from a single mine in North Carolina.

The rare earths and copper come from Chile, Congo, and China.

The special gases required for chip production, such as neon and fluorine, come mainly from Ukraine and Japan.

And last but not least, the design plans for the chips come from American companies such as NVIDIA, AMD, Apple, etc., which are developed using software from US companies such as Synopsys and Cadence.

What do you think? Supply chains are not only more global, but also much more complex than one might think. In this respect, TSMC is certainly only the tip of the iceberg. There are certainly also dangerous monopolies or oligopolies in other industries that we know less about.
