Crypto exchange BitMEX to shut down all operations by September 23rd 2026

I just read the news that the crypto exchange BitMEX unfortunately has to close and will completely cease trading as of September 23rd, 2026. Until then, it’s still possible to liquidate positions and withdraw funds without additional charges. After that, BitMEX will charge an additional annual 1% fee on held funds, which can still be withdrawn after the closure time.
The exchange was founded back in 2014 and was the first crypto exchange to introduce perpetual futures swaps with high leverage ratios. On Coingecko, the exchange has a Trust Score of 7/10 and ranks 65th at the time of this post, with a low daily trading volume of about $500K, which is likely one of the reasons for the shutdown.
Another contributing factor could have been the restrictive MiCA regulation in the EU, as many exchanges and fintech providers have lost access to the European market as a result.
What are your thoughts on the BitMEX shutdown? Have you used BitMEX? What were your experiences?
